SJTAC vs. Hellrazor?

Can someone tell me how the SJTAC stacks up against the Hellrazor? I am trying to find a user Hellrazor to take to Afghanistan with me and have had no luck, but came across a very nice SJTAC. I'm just not sure how the SJTAC would be as a E&E SERE Knife. HELP!

And Thanks!

They would be very similar, but were it me, I'd hold out for a Hell Razor. Mine is a bit thicker than the advertised 3/16th's" and the "CBT" (Corrugated Bevel Technologoy....um, the grooves on the side of the blade) would make it a far better prying tool. (like prying open a window or door)

That said, Busse themselves recommend the SJTAC to military folks that aren't sure what they'll need a knife for.

Not having been to the sandbox, I can only speculate about what might work best. Knife Combat, E&E and SERE probably aren't high on the list of probabilities, but I could easily see a need for prying windows and doors and punching a hole thru a cinder block wall to shoot thru. For these, I'd prefer a Hell Razor.

I have a Mud Razor, A SJTAC, a Mini EU-17 and a Desert Jack.

Of those four, the SJTAC would be my last choice, but only because the TAC handle doesn't fit me very well.

My first choice would be my Mud Razor because I feel it can do more than the Mini EU-17 or the Desert Jack.

If I only had the Mini EU-17 or Desert Jack, I would not feel bad about it.

If I only had the SJTAC, I'm sure it would do fine.

Thanks!
I really want a Hellrazor, Its just finding one that I can pay for, Hell at this point I can't even find one that I can't afford. The SJTAC is mint with a Spec-Ops sheath and at a awesome Price. I just don't know what to do....I leave on the 29th of Jan. and Don't have a lot of time to hold out.

Try posting in the WTB forum, asking for a user, and mention you're leaving for Afghanistan soon. Good chance someone will come through with a fair price.

I would recommend jumping on the SJT since it has a sheath and is at a great price. Once you get it, if you really don't like the feel of it, you could sell it immediately and still have a chance to score a Hell Razor if one shows up.

The SJT in the hand is better than a Hell Razor in the bush, so to speak.

My personal choice would be the SJTAC for it's size (slightly smaller than the HR but not too small) but mostly for it's skullcrusher pommel. Not that I'd crush any skulls with it, but that point may be more useful where you're going than the rounded butt of the HR. The fact that it's available with sheath is a plus as well.

Between my two, I would pick a Hell Razor over the SJTAC but I wouldn't feel bad with either one.

The greater influence for my decision would be how much better the mag grips on the HR feel in my hand.

Have you called the shop? Tell them your situation, and maybe they can help or at least point you in the right direction.

Also, put an ad in the WTB forum and mention that you are being deployed soon.

If there are any for sale on the forums, it can't hurt to ask a seller or trader if they could help you out;)

I agree with the above. I would prefer the HR, but would take the SJtac and you certainly won't regret it. Buy the good deal and if you find the HR in the meantime then you will have no problem unloading it. As a plus the Spec Ops sheath can be made to fit the Hell Razor. I have two SJtacs and I don't like the grip shape as much as the HR, but its not bad either. I certainly would feel well "knifed" with the SJtac at my side. Good luck with your search and God Bless.

OK,
I just sent payment on the SJTAC. It is mint cond. Tan/w Black Paper. It comes with a brand new Spec-Ops brand Survival nylon sheath. All Pay-Pal fee's and Priority Mail shipping w/insur. $350.00 was this a good deal?
Thanks!

Having both I would take my HR because it is a better SERE, GP blade. I much prefer the TAC handle though because it gives a great saber grip. My SJT is super fast and nimble.

As stated earlier the HR is a little sturdier than the SJT. If you don't have any experience sharpening a convex edge then get the HR. It has a "V" edge.

Good price. You won't be disappointed.

That was a pretty blade. And that's a $30-40 sheath. Shipping is $10. So you paid $300 for a SJTAC in black-paper with a durable-coated tan blade. I'd say that's fine. A HR might run you close to $400 with no sheath. (I shoulda learned and stocked up on those back last summer. Heck, I shoulda stocked up on Mud Razors. I love mine!)

You got a very good deal!

I keep a SJTac in my bag for emergencies, even though I have a Mud Razor.
They are both very good knives and you can't go wrong either way.
Stay safe over there,

and Thanks for your service:thumbup:

Thanks for all your help and support!
I will keep the SJTAC util I see a HR user for sale or trade and then maybe I could trade it or sale it out right.

Don't be surprised if you find that you like that SJ more than you think you will. It is the same size blade lengthwise but slimmer. Since you probably won't be chopping much, it might just work out better for you, plus black paper grips are very nice.

The sjtac is one of those "happy blades", where every time I pick it up it makes me happy. The grip, the length, the thickness, the edge length, everything is good. The balance is just right to be able to chop, but not be tip heavy.

One of these days I'll have to handle a HR to see how it compares...

Glad you got the SJ. Like someone already said, much better to have a SJ in the hand than a HR not found in time.

Rest assured, your blade will be superior to anything else you'll see over there......unless you run into another Hog !!

:D
