Skills:What are more useful Hitches or Loops?

One thing, I am having a good time doing this summer is learning new knots.

It occurred to me that Hitches seem more useful than loops. I am not saying you don't need to learn loops, just that hitches are more useful.

I gotta say personally I've always been a loop tyer .......but then again I never bothered to learn many hitches

Doc, skills threads need constant watering and nurturing to keep them going.

A little watering.......

OK, so you're out hiking and you run into a bunch of nice straight Viburnum, just the right size for arrow shafts. Out comes the Bark River golok and ch, ch, ch (I couldn't think of anything else to describe the noise of the golok whipping though the air and clipping the shoots :() - You now have a nice bundle of about 12 future game-getters. So how do you carry them?

Well one way is to tie the bundle together, fore and aft with a single constrictor and here is an easy way to tie it (I'm assuming most people know how to tie a clove hitch):

If you tie a single (or double) constrictor, sometimes they can be very difficult to untie, in fact, you might have to resort to the golok again .

To avoid this make the last pass under the loop with a loop rather than the end, in other words, make it a slippery knot, or you can include a small smooth stick (toggle) in the knot and when you want to untie the knot, pull out the toggle to loosen it.

I love the constrictor for straightening my drills. I lash them using 3 constrictors along a stair rail.

Knots are the simplest, most convenient, and accessible wilderness skill to learn. I can't believe I waited so long but better late than never.
