Very nice. Did you cast the bolster from a melt? Nice looking scale with a super clean pein job!

I heated a stack of 16 quarters in my forge. Then hammered them together. I used two pieces of thin plate with four bolts holding them together to hold the stack together while heating.

Hell ya thats good enough. makes me feel like I need to kickit up another notch. Nice work!!

Sure is, looks great.

Thanx, guys
Unfortunately, I am going to sell it so I can get more supplies...
I really don't want to part with it...

That not allowed with two months experience.:(
I can't do that!!!!

Wow how hot did you have to heat the quarters to get them to weld? I am sure you are very proud of that knife i shure would be.

Bruce you still haven't got those nickle experiments done yet?

Sweet knife Hickbob. What's the steel and how'd you heat treat it?

It is 1/8" O1 tool steel that I heated to crit in my gas forge, then I let it soak for about 20 minutes and edge quenched in 130 degree oil. Tempered in oven 400 degrees x 2.
I haven't tried nickels... but i'm game. As far as the quarters go, I got them to an orange/yellow heat and held them til I saw the copper starting to bead on the edges. Then gave em a few light taps with a 4lb hammer to set them. Then I just hammered em out.
I bought the black ash from Tracy. It was a block that I slice to get enough for two sets of scales. Workin on a budget lik mine sucks...scraping nickels and dimes... I guess quarters too. lol

How is your shop currently set up? Sounds like you have a good forge and it looks like you have a grinder.

I barely have a shop. lol I have a home-made gas forge that I built from 10" ductile iron pipe. I have a Grizzly 2"x72" grinder. HF 16 speed drill press. I have some kind of Chinese wood only bandsaw a friend gave me. Files and the ever useful Dremel. Don't forget the air compressor...gotta blow my lil shop out ever now and again. I can make a real mess. Oh and a wire welder for playing around with oddball stuff like forge welding chainsaw chains.
I am aquiring the necessary materials to build a 20 ton press. I can't wait to get started on that. My poor guns are getting jealous of my new hobby... :)

I would spend minimum 2 months only for that knife if it was my first (actually I did spend 2 months for my first 5-6 years ago), but when did you learn to make it then? :) Wow wow, it is just slick... Great work...

Well... guns and knives have been my passion for most of my life. There is no way I can afford the equipment to make guns, so I try to buy or build a little here and there for knife makingh. I have been a lurker on here for a little while and picked up some good information on top of being a hunter. I have been skinning animals my entire life. When you have used a Wal-mart special to clean deer, you really can see what needs improvement. I just took it from there and try to design something that will work and it doesn't hurt if it looks good too. I hope to achieve the level of work that some of you guys are able to do, and I know only experience at doing my best will ever get me there. Guys, thanx for all the compliments you have thrown at me. It makes me feel I am on the right track.
