Skinners are taking shape.

I think I over-estimated my window on second look Jonny. It's more like 5 weeks. I did ship em, wish me luck. In the meantime, I can play with stuff like this - you may remember it.

These showed up today. It turns out I will not be as rushed as it seemed because I decided this wasn't my year for the trip. I'll send them up to Canada this year anyway and I will look forward to hearing how they do.

Now I have to decide how to dress them. I'm going to do some of the normal outdoor colors, but I will most likely mix it up a bit. I wish I had some leather working skills at this point for a few of the sheaths.

Cool, they're back in hand eh? Get to work buddy, I want to see how they turn out.

Even if you stick to black or earth tones for handles, show me at least one knife with a thick liner in yellow, orange, or toxic green. Something bright that pops!!

I’m back at the skinners. It was not fun to realize that I would not finish in time for October, could not afford to go to Canada last year, and that I needed a hiatus from these things because they mattered too much to me. I did some other projects and took a break. I can’t believe I started these last July.

Here’s the batch after HT and with affair amount of bevel/flat work. This is my least favorite point in the process. To me, they always look better pre HT and/or post slabs.

The one on the bottom needs some disc grinder love – It’s a vertical taper throughout.

Here’s the bottom one up close.

here’s a bad picture from the cutting side.

This one should be cool. It’s less skinner and more EDC, but I like it. I have a friend who I want to make a leather sheath for it. He hasn’t said “yes,” yet, so we will see.

This one may have the most visual appeal.

This one is pretty clean so far. Distal and tapered tangs, but heavier. My tapered tangs need more taper.

Here are a couple things I did during my downtime, outside of some other knives that you may or may not have seen.

Playhouse for the kids.

Frame for my sign.

Slab suggestions are welcome, I have a few ideas but more knives.

Take care,

Erik

Those are looking great, Brother! I know how it goes having to walk away from a project for a minute... Anyway, I'm glad you were able to get back to them - they are looking far too clean to be forgotten! Looking forward to future posts/pics and the final product.

Those are really looking good. I am interested in how they turn out. Your grinds are nice and crisp.

Thanks fellas, I imagine some will have scales on board next weekend for some of them. When I taper the tang, I also taper the scales so that everything is square before I get drilling. The disc grinder with the deck attached comes in handy for that, along with a caliper.

Nice work Erik. Looking good mate.

I have had a bit of a hiatus from making also. Need to get back into, got the guild show in May.

Your grinds are looking super clean!

Matt

I finished 4 other knives and a dive sheath, but with the holidays, and needing some belts and paper, it took a while to get these going. Thanks Daniel and Matt.

Here's where I am today. The slabs are camo, black, dark brown, and green canvas, and burgandy linen (all micarta). The liners are all g-10, white, grey, toxic green and hunter orange. The bolts are stainless and the center pins (not shown) are mosaic. All of the tangs are tapered but only by about .030-.040. (not much, I know). The slab prep and drill process is so time consuming, that in the future I will only taper when it's going to be a big taper. Some people shim their slabs for drilling on tapered tangs, I prefer to taper the slabs and drill flat. Either way, it's a process - especially with bolts.

Nice! Making some good progress bud:thumbup:

Naturally I'm diggin' your handles:D

Keep it coming, I love seeing this stuff

Thanks, Jon! My next knives will be wood models. I'm almost done practicing and I want to start a few lines that are worth repeating, so a modeling I go.....soon

I roughed out the slabs and got 5 of the 7 bolted and glued today. I have to search for black epoxy filler, as the damn mosaic pin had voids throughout.
