What do you guys think about the SKS for a low cost SHTF rifle?

I have owned em in the past, and they are accurate, and low cost.

Just bought me a new one with a composite stock. Chinese, like new for 160.00. Not to shabby.

I wanted the paratrooper norinco they had in there, but they wanted 350.00 for it. They are pretty rare I guess, not many imported.

Sounds like a pretty good buy. I've got an old one with a wood stock, but I never really shoot it. I guess it's just good to have, since we might not be able to buy them for too much longer.

Not a bad gun to have and you cant beat the cost of SKS ammo!! Good plinker and you can stock up on the end of days ammo!

Cool, I know there are better rifles out there, but I have a sweet paratrooper sks that I really like. I think it's a good budget rifle.

Thats what I thought too. They had the armory condition ones for 200.00 in there too. Had 5 of em up front, and some more in the back. I wouldnt mind ownin 5 of them to put in dry boxes in the basement.

They also had a US made AK underfolder. I liked it, but it was 445.00 brand new. Too much for an AK imo.

Check out the stuff Tapco has for them. Very good stuff and the prices are great. I'm gonna get the M-4 stock as soon as I can spend any money. I have a D& C metal 37 round mag for it too. But with 37 rounds the mag is about as heavy as the rifle :) Those tapco 20 rounders should be fine.

Yeah, not the end all of rifles ;):cough M14 cough:;) but a good one for stashin away, and pretty reasonable to shoot. Gonna put a folding stock on it and store it away with 1000 rounds.

I converted my SKS with some of the Tapco items. The T6 stock with the adjustable buttstock is a heck of a good unit, but replace the nuts and bolts with better stuff ASAP.
A stock saddle available from several manufacturers is a good addition. I want a good AK, but it has to wait due to budget considerations.

Good choice :) 75 years after the mushroom clouds the AK/SKS rifles will still be working. Might only be cockroaches, bees, and spiders carrying them but the guns will work :D

You are right Bill!!! Bombproof suckers indeed. I like the kalishnikov rifles alot. They are easy to strip, operate, and they are reliable. Easy one to teach a newbie to rifles to use w/o much effort if I had to.

Accurate enough from my experience, and I'll give the SKS credit, hey can take a beating like few other rifles can!

Good buy,I have own one SKS NIB won on a football pot, good hard to beat rifle for the low cost and for its intended purpose.
But I sold it,30 round mag kept falling out after discharging a few rounds...could been mag issues or rifle either way the SKS found a new owner, who today still has it.
Congrats bro it is a tough rifle

This one has the 10 round fixed mag. I intend to just leave it. Ive heard that moddin em to take detachable mags causes issues. Im good enough that 10 rounds will do the job.

That is true, mine had fixed 10 rounder and a buddy said he could mod it w/o issues well, I shoulda just left it alone :grumpy: but live and learn...:D

I got mine back when China flodded the market with cheap AK's and SKS's. You could get a Norinco SKS for 69 bucks and 1400 rds. worth of copper washed ammo in those tuna cans for a paltry 99 bones. Man those were the days.

Mine isn't a tack driver but it will hit a chest sized piece of sheet metal at 200 yards all day long which is good enough for my 1/2 century old eyes.

It's a part of my grab and go kit. I like the fact that it doesn't need magazines and/or stripper clips.

It's never failed to go bang either.
