skull cap

..........with windstopper and it is a great cold weather hat - little to no wind penetration. It does reduce hearing significantly, given it's characteristics. Their beenies would be good, and not look so monty pythonish :)[/IMG]

I have a Mountain Hardware, regular looking beenie with Windstopper and I agree on the hearing loss.......great protection but I am always raising it above my ear to hear stuff.

Smartwool beanies all the way. If I'm not wearing that I've got on my stormy kromer. Another great hat.

If you are very active, you need one that insulates less. Otherwise, you get the dreaded WET HEAD!!

For sittin' around the fire at the end of the day, you need somethin' heavier.

For the light cap, I found a Cloudveil at T.J. Maxx that has Schoeller Dryskin Extreme fabric -- very water repellant and very breathable (6x Gore). Elastic panel in the back allows pulling down over ears. Horrid color, though.

for general urban/woods bumbling, i use a standard watch cap. For sitting around the fire at night in winter or in the cooler months, or for sleeping outdoors at night i use a Thinsulate lined thick wool hat to keep me toasty.

I know the new "foliage" color is quite odd (I really prefer the coyote brown instead), but since the black fleece watch caps are no longer authorized for Army use (phased out), there should be plenty on the surplus market. I've really grown to love the simple fleece watch caps (most of mine are made by Polartec). They are light, dry fast, can be rolled up just over the ears for better hearing, and can be pulled down onto the neck for better coverage. Since I have so many, I don't have a need to try something else, but for me, they work great. I use them for PT (the fugly foliage green color), I have a few black ones in my field pack and backpacking/hiking packs. They take up no room add no negligible weight and make a tremendous difference at night to keep you body heat in!

duluth trading "shoreman's fleece" watch cap. windproof, waterproof, warm as heck, and inexpensive to boot

I just recently bought a USN beanie. It was the one they are selling as swag for their site. It's a great beanie and is very warm. It fits nice and tight unlike a lot of others that I have.

We have a great BN CSM, but I was recently corrected by the uniform nazies that black is out and green is in...I stand corrected because we now have until September 2009.

The wear-out date for the Black Fleece Watchcap is September 2009...that just means I will have several for all my packs:D Away from garrison after the wear-out date, I think you'll be okay to use it in the field...most uniform nazies don't like cold, wet weather or where it may be dusty, muddy and you may get a little dirt on you clean ACU's:D
