Skunks

Skunk, weasel, mink, wolverine, badger, are all mustelids. Skunk are probably the most even-tempered of all of them.

That is true; my mother, when she was a small girl, told me that the farm cat who just had kittens adopted an abandoned baby skunk. It was a part of the family and was all over around the house (outside) and acted just like the domesticated cats...would even let you pet her.

ROCK6

I was walking around one night where a woman regularly put out cans of food for the local feral cat population. Sure enough, there were a bunch of them chowing down, on top of a big rock. As I approached, they turned to look, and one of them jumped down and hid behind the rock -- a skunk.

Found where the skunk lives.

Under my front porch. My mother-in-law spotted him going in, and she knows a skunk when she sees one.

So, the experiment begins.

1. Mothballs. I'll try this for a couple of days and see if he hates it.

2. Chocolate. Since I know where his hole is, I can get the chocolate in there without worrying about pets.

3. Something called "Critter Ridder." My wife just picked it up at the store.

I'll report back on which one worked, if any. I regret the lack of a control group, but figure I'll have enough work with one skunk, let alone four!

So far, he wasn't put off by the mothballs.

And he enjoyed the chocolates very much.

We have some rain scheduled tonight, but it's supposed to be clearer tomorrow, so I'll try the "Critter Ridder" stuff and see if that works.

The hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, dish soap recipe works well. Just add enogh water to make it syrupy. I've used it on my Lab 5 or 6 times. Let it sit on them for 5 minutes or so--KV

The only thing you have to watch out for is to keep it out of their eyes. Considering how some dogs will thrash around under those circumstances, that ain't always easy. Keep some clear water to rinse it out if they get zapped.

Slow learner owner:

My neighbors came home one evening from walking their dog, which ha just gotten blasted by a skunk. They had no idea what to do, so i tipped them off to the peroxide, baking soda, soap deal. Worked fine.

A week later he was off on a business trip and she walked the dog to the same field as usual off the leash and the dumb dog went after the skunk again. Bam! She had that one to wash by herself, and was not happy.

So leash the dog ...

Day 2 of the "Critter Ridder," and no sign of the skunk.

Basically, as soon as I opened the can and peeled off the safety label, I smelled black pepper. Smelled good, actually,

I naturally assumed that we paid good money for ground black pepper, but I read the contents, and it turns out that there are only two things I recognized in it: black pepper oil and cayenne. And that accounts for less than 1% of the contents.

You do, per directions, use a LOT of it, but it wasn't very expensive. It looks just like black pepper, though. And I poured it into his hole. Evidently it burns the eyes, skin, and nose of the critter until he gets out of it, and it lingers where poured for a while.

Well, like I said: day 2, and no skunk. But as I usually say, "eyes open, up, and all around!" I'll let you know if he comes back.
