Slasher Movies

Smoke - these are good - but if you wanna see some of the best Ganga style action - try finding an old movie ('70)called "The warriors" - great action and use of all kinds of weapons including knives, baseball bats, paint sprays etc.

highly recommended.

Blilious, "The Warriors" is a comedy not an action flick.

I've seen a good amount of knife movies and have some of the scenes on tape. Another newer flick is "Club Vampire", so now you get knife fighting vampires in the mix.

About a year and a half ago i got interested in what makes people so afraid of knives and not guns. There are several psychological reasons. I'll recount what i read as i remember it, it is correct to the best of my knowledge.
1. Knives produce more fear because people know what it feels like to be cut. They know that it HURTS and that they bleed alot, that it produces huge shock effects, and that it isn't very pleasent.
2. Because of many movies showing the "One shot" death and people saying "i entered a state where all pain was erased" (note - this is technically possible, but unlikely with one bullet.....) People see guns as you get shot, you are instantly and automatically dead. Studies havew shown that some people would rather be hit with a close range shotgun blast than stabbed because "It wouldn't hurt as much"...of course.
3. Knives (esp throwers) have always been seen as "dirty" "assasins weapons", A myth propogated by hollywood today. The bad guy is always the one with the knife, and the good guy mus then use his fists to beat the bad guy up (who never knows how to fight with a knife. This is also done in relation to other hand to hand weapons. The worst examople i have seen is in Broken Arrow when John Travolta hits Christian Slater three times with a crowbar, once directly across the spine. Slater then catches the crowbar, but decides to do the "honourable" thing by dropping it and punching travolta, who he has never beaten in a boxing match before, with a nuclear warhead counting down? I don't think so.

I know this has been a long winded summary of things already said, but i hope it helps some people out.

Hmm, just a question but wouldn't a heavy calibre hand gun like a .45 or a .50 AE have sufficient kinetic energy to knock a man down??Or even a .454 Casull...I realize that the standard 9mm parabellum is too small to have that kind of effect, but I would think that the kinetic energy imparted to the surface of the target by any of the above mentioned calibers (excluding the 9mm) would be enough to drop a man...Especially if you use some of the extreme mushrooming rounds like the SXT...Am I completely offbase here???
Great bladework in Movies??? Hmm, Blade is a nice one...Some pretty intense scenes, although unrealistic...I especially like the V-Gar like cable he's got attached to his belt

Smoke - Are you kidding me?

Are you talking about the movie where they have to travel across NY in order to go back to their "territory" and fight all the gangs on the way??

Or was I just too young and easily impressed when I saw it so many years ago

"Warriors, come out and play..."

I didn't see that movie as especially amusing, more of the action genre.

And thanks guys, I'm now going to look for a copy of "Leon" myself. The shorter, editted version now turns out to be enough to whet my appetite.

And cerulean, the "Invisible Metal Sheath" is done by the same sound studio whose mastery of cinematic arts brought us the "car tires squealing on a gravel road". Definite not an award winning performance.

Don LeHue

Rome did not create a great empire by having meetings...they did it by killing all those who opposed them.

Blilious, my friends watch it just to laugh at the hair and uniforms.

DonL, try ebay but beware, bidding wars on this flick can be intense. If I get it soon, I'll give you my copy.

Well smoke - in this case I really have to see it again.:O

On second thought - maybe I shouldn't - I'll just stick with the fond memory...

Did you see "Blade" with Wesley Snipes which - BTW - is the greatest - not including Steven Seagull of course

It's a nice Vampire action flick with lots of BS but also nice sword scenes.

I agree with all those that praise steven segal, no way I’d take him on. I would however question the strength needed to drive a Chef’s knife through the top of someone’s skull (under siege 2). I know he’s big, I know about technique, timing, etc... (I weigh 300 pounds and am ranked reasonably high in several martial arts) and I would baulk at ramming a knife through someone’s skull. Maybe if it was a Strong, sharp dagger, with a non slip grip and a big handguard.... but a cooking knife? The potential for sliced and diced fingers is huge
Carnifex.... I am not a handgun “expert” although I do know a bit. From what I understand, even something like a .454 Casull, loaded with SXT won’t Stop a charging human body. The bullets will rip through, destroying tissue and bones (and the guy getting hit will die rather rapidly). It all depends on how close he is, what he’s armed with etc. If he’s 3 feet away at full speed with a baseball bat over his head when the first round hits him, he will probably still hit you. If he’s 15 feet away and you empty the cylinder into him, he will be very dead.
If you can carry a Desert Eagle or a Grissly (to my knowledge the only guns chambered for .50 AE) or a .454 revolver (no autos in this caliber, not for a while anyway.... I think?) on a regular basis (they are damn HUGE), you really shouldn’t have that many troubles in a fight.
The only weapon I have fired that would knock someone back was a modified shotgun my uncle had. It was a double barreled 10 gauge. he’d cut it down (legally) and replaced the dual trigger with a single one. If you could handle the kick, it would rip someone in half. Hugely impractical, but.....exciting to shoot. If you whipped that monster out, any BG would think about 500 times before attacking you.

This is knife forum - so I don't think its a good idea to start a string about it - but SMG like the Uzi, H&K MP5 and others can drive 9 mm and .40 to VERY high speeds thus getting amazing stopping power.

Long guns have the same advantage, and .50 sniper rifles rule...

BTW - the problem with the Cussel and .50 AE is mainly over penetration - which means most of the energy is lost in the good case and causes some innocent bystander to get hit in the worst case.

As for the fight with Tommy Lee Jones in "Under Siege" - I do believe it was a Mad Dog ATAK 2 (or a Mission - there is no telling by the looks alone) and I think the knife went in through the top of the head - where a softer spot existed due to the shape of the skull and the fact this is where the bones of the skull connect.

It would have been allot harder to drive a knife through the forehead - it is the hardest part of the skull.

Anyway - don't believe EVERYTHING they show you in the movies...
