Finally got the time to finish this up. Actually, finally got my shop dug out of the snow. Short video with a test run below. I am very impressed with the quality of the finished product. Tracking is perfect with a few adjustments and washers to line every thing up. Total cost of build was around $400.

Correction. There are three types of sling grinders. Flat, sling and combo. This is a flat and it is platen only. The kit itself is only $115, so if you have motors, you can make a flat and a wheel for cheap.

I grind free hand, but I plan on adding a work rest for profiling. I think it should be pretty easy to do, just an arm back to the upright then a tilt adjust to a 4" square piece of 1/4" plate i have sitting in my scrap pile.

Thanks, it's like Christmas morning when you get a sled and there's no snow, since i'm at work and just want to grind a blade.

Looks good! You have me thinking about building one. I would suggest you flip the shock. You want to protect the seal on the shock the best you can. By having it on the downhill side it's less likely to accumulate metal dust that can destroy the seal.

Had not thought of that. Thanks. If anyone has any questions, I'm all yours. BTW, I added it all up today, and the build was right around $400, so cheaper than I thought.

I wonder if one could be built to run 132" belts. I have a bunch of 50grit blaze 3" wide belts.

Check out the wheel grinder at polarbearforge.com at the bottom of the assembly instructions page he shows an arm that holds a small wheel. You could maybe make an arm like that with a platen on the end?

So now that you have had the SLING grinder for a while do you wish you had done a combo so you could hollow grind too?

I am planning to build a grinder this summer and I am seriously considering the SLING or the Grinder in a Box. I don't know much yet so I want to keep my doors open. So I think I would like to be able to hollow grind on a contact wheel as well as flat grind with a platen. Combo Sling? I also want to spend as little as possible because I just don't know if I will be making knives in 5 years. I have to try for a while I suppose.

But basically I am getting a more conventional grinder with tool arms if that is fairly flexible if I purchase the GIB and of course the SLING is not as versatile but half the price of the GIB. Right?

The kit was like $115. I am happy with the sling. If I stay at it, I plan on a much nicer grinder down the road, but keep this one for hogging out flat bevels. That may be years or never. Either way, I'm happy with this one.

Okay, but...what about the combo SLING? A bit hollow grind and flat grind for the same $? OR is there some drawbacks on the combo i am missing?

I don't have a combo. I considered it, but I only flat grind and I didn't want to spring for a wheel. Since my plan is to have a multi arm machine in the future. If you think you want a wheel, it seems like a good setup, but hopefully some of the hollow grind guys will chime in.
