Sling grinder complete

I've started a "DIY Tools for the knife maker" group on Facebook. Mind if I Share this info there?

So does the SLING grinder get some of it's "rigidity" from being attached to the motor? I am 90% sure I am going to go with a 3ph motor and vfd but I also have step pulleys, pillow blocks off other machines at home so my mind was tossing around the idea of just using them seeing as I have them already. Does a sling grinder HAVE to be direct drive or can one pull off step pillow blocks and step pulleys?

YES. the upright and base are connected via the motor. So it MUST be direct drive.

Are you still happy with your sling grinder? I'm seriously considering one. After using it for a while are you looking to upgrade yet, or does it still meet your needs.

Ben

It meets my needs still. The thing I wish I really had is variable speed, but of course that is a result of my motor choice. An adjustable tool rest would be nice. I made one, but it is not easily adjustable. When I have the time, I may make a better rest. The only other thing is I would love to have the ability to have a small wheel. I believe the wheel sling can do this, but mine can't. It's not a huge deal, but it would be a nice option. Down the road, I could see getting something really versatile ( tiltable, tool arms, variable speed), and keep the sling for roughing and profiling. Since over half the cost of this setup was the motor, the cost of a 3 phase and vfd is a sure thing anyway. But if that never happens, I'll still be pleased with it.

Thanks for the info. I've been thinking about all the things you mentioned. Especially the work rest. I figured I would make one similar to yours. And hopefully that will work well enough. I'm committed to variable speed but it is hard to spend more on the VFD then anything else.

I'm confused by the combo sling. Anyone have one? Does the bottom contact wheel rotate up in some way? It seems like it would be hard to use if not.
