Slingshot hunting

As a kid, I couldn't afford ball bearings. I shot rocks, nuts from my Dad's workbench, marbles, arrows and, of course, pieces of house brick.

USMCSNIPER34,

I watched Dave's son fire arrows from that slingshot at Dirttime and it was surprisingly accurate and powerful. The Whisker Biscuit sight is the key. Pretty easy to build one if you already have a slingshot. Otherwise, it doesn't cost hardly anything above parts to order one already assembled by Dave.

My only question is how many shots you'd get out of Dave's take-down arrows. They seemed to work fine but if you've ever watched slow motion footage of the flexing an arrow does when launched, I've got to believe that center joint would become a problem. But I could be wrong: Dave knows a lot more than I do.

With regard to the discussion of steel ball bearings vs. marbles, etc., my favorite ammo is 54 cal. lead balls from my muzzleloader. If you have the really heavy powerbands you can launch them with pretty devastating effect. With the regular bands, the 45 cal balls for my Ruger Old Army fly a little flatter.

Used to hunt bullfrogs out on the lake and fry up the legs as a kid !! Don't think I can still shoot a wrist rocket with such accuracy anymore :)

I use a sling shot and biodegradable paint balls to chase off loons while I'm fly fishing. Those red eyed devils steel the trout right off your your line, drives me nuts!

That's really interesting. I've always liked loons but I'd have a big change of heart if they prevented me from catching dinner. Is that in an area where there are lots of fisherman or in wilderness?

These are pretty well fished lakes. These guys eat all year off of anglers lines.

Thanks---I was hoping it was because they were exposed to lots of fisherman and learned the behavior. I've never seen loons in wild country do that and it would really tick me off too! Sounds like you have a good aversion therapy program.

This is a cool thread - I just gotta bookmark it!

Merry Christmas All,

My old model I had as an adolescent/teen is hanging in my Dad's workshop, on the pegboard. I believe I will have to buy some new bands and let my two sons go wild with it back in the woods over the holidays. (Of course, I'll be the "Range" Instructor.)

man if you like hunting with a sling shot you should check out wildernessoutfitters on you tube. dave made a sling shot bow i think its called check it out its pretty cool he also made a bow fishing kit out of it even made a home made reel to go with it

I saw some photos of that fishing bow on a sling shot web site. I tried to find one for sale, but I figured out that it was a custom deal. It was a sweet set up!

grew up with dad's black widow, seriously powerful and accurate. He would get ballbearings from the millrights at the slaughterhouse and we dropped a lot of rabbits, squirrels and hun's. Tons of fun and I can still hit cans at 50 to 75 feet when camping. Brother lost the widow, all I have is a cheap arm brace model now. Dad did not like the habituated crows in provincial parks camping and would drill one with a small rock first day when nobody was looking (no kills in the park). They would harass everyone around but us most times

My 4 brothers and I had a bunch of home-made and store-bought slingshots. The longest lasting, and most deadly in kid-hands was the Saunders Wrist-Rockets. Mine is over 40 years old. We loaded rocks, ball-bearing, marbles and nuts (not the kind that fall from trees).

The most effective ammo was home-cast lead ammo. I would drill shallow holes in a plank, then melt led over a fire in a big lead melting ladle...poured the molten lead into the holes so that the lead would dome a bit.

Hunting deer with a wrist rocket! You gotta check the site out.:thumbup:

I watched Dave's son firing arrows from his slingshot (www.wildernessoutfittersarchery.com) at Dirttime. Pretty impressive for such a simple setup.

If you are impressed with hunting deer with a slingshot, the legendary Skeeter Vaughn used to take them with a throwing knife.
