Slipjoint forum - why ever not?

It's probably best that there is just one SJ forum, no matter which board has it. I already have a hard time remembering which one said what and where.

I love slipjoints, and carry one almost every day. I would appreciate a separate forum, but whether the traffic would warrant it or not, I haven't a clue. I will be sure to include the word SLIPJOINT in many more thread titles in the future, for sure, if that's what it takes! :D

Count me in as interested in the idea!
If I post this multiple times, does that qualify as "Traffic"?
:D

Why not.........slip joints and lock backs combined in one forum? It is not to say that a slip joint or lock back does not have a following because that is not true. In my neck of the woods, maybe yours too, there are more Buck 110's, Spyderco lock backs(Enduras and such), Old Timers, and Case's being carried and used by a wide margin than Commanders, Sebenza's, and knives of that nature with their own forum. I have also been to a few regional knife shows. Guess what? The vendors that are selling above mentioned knives are doing brisk business while the Microtech guy is twiddling his thumbs.

Before bladeforums or the net existed, I had never heard of Emerson, Busse Combat or companies of that nature. Had I ever heard of or been exposed to Buck. Old Timer, and Case? You betcha.

Final thought.....How does one expect something to grow when one keeps cutting the dang roots off the dang thing. Big D1

About the only time I've posted has been in threads about slipjoints, while I enjoy a lot of the information and conversation on BF, a slip joint forum would be great.
Thanks,

Mike

My meager collection is 99% slipjoints and traditional style lockbacks. I'm nowhere near as experienced in knife lore as most of you guys so I probably wouldn't be able to add much traffic to a slipjoint forum - but you can bet I'd be reading it all the time.

I cant imagine why there is no slipjoint forum. There is about every other kind, even ones having nothing to do with knives. There are alot of forums here which do not seem to justify thier being here is traffic is a requirement. Slipjoints are a major part of the knife community, and dismissing the without even testing it out seems silly. Oh well, we dont own this place, so we cannot really dictate what is here. However its just my opinion that having one would be a real benefit.

I'm in.Maybe if Gus would volunteer to moderate,I would volunteer to help out also. There seems to be interest.

When and if Spark and the rest of the mods. decide, it would be an honor to cover it with nifrand.

In the mean time there is plenty of room here, in Gallery and in Custom to discuss these knives so it is not the case that us slipjoint fans are being denied and we may even pick up a few more fans along the way :D.

I am really enjoying the sight of all the slipjoint folks coming out of the woodwork:D I have learned a lot about work from makers I have not met yet and have been introduced to some fine factory work through exchanges here.

In the meantime lets get some more pics and information up.

Actually, I wasn't going to bother responding to this thread at all. It didn't seem worth bothering, as the idea has been shot down so many times. It's not that I wan't interested, but didn't have much faith that another try would be met with any more seriousness than it had in the past.

Same here. I love slipjoints and I think they are catching onnow in a big way. When was the last time "knife news and your views" or whatever that forum is called did any traffic? Slipjoints rock !

I nominate "Buzzbait" for moderator He has the knowledge and time to do this thing.

I'd be happy to help in any way I can. I've moderated hobby forums before, so that's not a problem. The people here on BF are actually a lot easier to get along with than in most hobbies.

As far a being supremely knowledgeable on the topic of slipjoints…. I’m no slipjoint professor. I’ve read a lot on slipjoints, but there are a good many of you guys who know much more than I do. But again, I’m willing to help in any way I can. :)

Why? Why not? If after 6 months or so and the traffic isn't there or whatever, do away with it. But at least give it an opportunity.

To borrow a phrase, "Doing the right thing isn't always easy, but its always right." ;) ;)

I am confident that Gus, Nifrand and Buzzbait would make a super slipjoint triumvirate!!

Well I suppose if there was a slipjoint forum I could go there and find out what a slipjoint is because as it stands right now I haven't got a clue.

Anyone want to tell me?

I'm not all that interested in slipjoints, but I do really enjoy BladeForums due to my enjoyment of knives and the great discussion & info provided by forumites (birds of a feather and all that). As I read more and learn more I gain interest in new blades, and have purchased a few (MT Tachyon on the way this week, plenty of cuts by next week). Spark has given the criteria for a new forum in this statement:

1. There must be a need for it
2. There must be sustainable traffic for it - not just the initial "pop"
3. There must be qualified moderators.

You folks seem to have #3 squared away (Gus, Nifrand and Buzzbait), provided they meet Spark's approval. Do they?

#1 should be able to be proven out objectively without too much trouble, if you folks are *really* interested. What % of the knife market are slipjoints? How many companies and custom builders are there and how does that compare? What is the ave. cost of a slipjoint (available to more consumers?) and how does that compare? What type of knife is most often carried and where do slipjoints fall into the ranking? Slipjoints are part of the maturation process of the "blade" in general....what is the history of the slipjoint? How many forumites on BladeForums own a slipjoint?

#2 also should be fairly easy to determine. Someone mentioned 300+ posts in the last few months - how does that compare to other forums in the same time frame? Establish a baseline, give comparisons and then sell the idea.

If you've provided objective facts, then all that remains are the subjective aspects of the decision. Of course then there's always, "if you build it they will come" ;). Good luck folks, I'm headed back to my other fav forums and will hopefully add slipjoints to the list in the near future. All I have now are the ones my Dad & Grand Dad handed down to me (hint hint - proves longevity of this type of knife!).
