Photos Slippies, Stones and Strops!

Me and this India stone have been having some disagreements that I've been chronicling over in the MTE sub-forum but I think I got it licked now.

These were the last two knives I worked on today. I know the Dexter Russell Vegetable Cleaver might not be "traditional" per se, but it's pretty darned throw-back and simple. Great knife too. :)

I use the piece of 2x4 and a slab of cocobolo as needed for height with first an old Washita stone and afterwards move to the Soft Arkansas usually until shaving sharp. I hardly ever strop and dont hone much anymore but i love the old Black Surgical Arkansas and the translucent Hard Arkansas. I buy any old Arkansas stone i see for sale. I have no idea how many i have but always need more. The old ones are way better quality and i believe the Washita vein is gone so they are like gold.
I've loved knives and sharpening stones since i was a kid. I probably have a soft spot for Arkansas stones because i grew up about 30 miles from where they are mined.
Anyway here are a few of my stones with the latest knives ive sharpened with them.

Ditto what Eli Chaps said. Lovely collection that you have gathered over the years. I can relate, you sound like an old fashioned skilled craftsman. Good luck to you.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

A few weeks ago during a big get together, I noticed my best friend was using a traditional. He told me it was his Old Timer but we got buys and I didn't get a chance to ask any more. Turns out it is an older USA made one though. But, when I saw he was using a traditional slip joint I was pretty excited and knew exactly what I was going to do for his birthday!

Well tonight was his surprise 50th and I got this guy all tuned up for him. Left the clip and pen with a Fine India edge but since these little Wharncliffe blades are so good at push cutting I polished it up a bit on this black Arkansas. I got this several months ago but rarely carry it and it's a really great knife. Still had the box too. And yes, he was super excited and loved that it was USA made and real bone. He was showing it off to everyone. So glad he liked it so much and was happy. He deserves it! :)
