Carl,
you know my answer to your question. Hopefully, we will be discussing some new pictures on this same thread in a few days. But in the meantime...

Oh sure Carl. Now there is something else I have to try!
You could be a snake oil salesman. ;)

Snake oil?

SNAKE OIL???

Hurph! Now I'm insulted! As if I'd sell snake oil.

However...I still have a few bottle left of my grandmothers Long life elixir. Made by her from a recipe she got from an old Gypsy woman whose entire clan lived to be a hundred years old. For only 4.99, and if you order today we'll toss in...

:D

Carl.

i have a svord peasant that i often use as a garden/forestry knife. its not generally the sort of knife you might carry as part of your daily rig, though, because its so dang bulky. its more of the sort of knife you take with you when you will be cutting stuff more than toting it in your pocket. i managed to get it awfully sharp with my mediocre skills.
i also often use my opinel #7 without locking it open because it isnt always needed.
am very interested in a higonokami and would like to hear more about them. how hard are they to sharpen? how easy are they to carry? etc.

Years ago I carried an Opinel. Not for very long. The second time I reached into my pocket and the knife bit me, I set it aside. I’ve never used an Opinel since.

No, back then they didn't have a notch in the ring to let you lock the knife closed. I gather modern Opinels are different, but you couldn't prove it by me. There are too many less hostile patterns around for me to go there again.

I didn't object to using the Opinel without closing the locking ring. For most purposes normal care is all you need to stay safe. If some application looks tricky, spin that lock.

I did and do object to a pocket knife that doesn’t stay closed. Unless I’m sure a friction folder will stay closed in my pocket every time…I’ll pass.

I have a Svord Peasant that doesn't see much use primarily because of the size.

My Opinel #8 sees use almost every day. And I rarely use the locking ring.

I once had a Japanese higo knife with an excellent laminated steel blade.

I used it around the house a little, but I never carried it. No way to keep it closed without using a sheath.

It was a neat little thing, but I never figured out what it did any better than a slip joint. In the end I relegated it to novelty status and limited it to very light duty.

I have one and use it for carpentry work as a marking out tool
It opens very easily so I use it more than a sheepsfoot slippie
It stays on a cutting bench, not carried around

What does it do better than a slippie?
Holds a wicked sharp edge for cutting wood...

I was gifted my Opinel in 80, when I was working in Brittany
All the workers and farm hands had one
And it then backpacked with me being so light

I thought I'd snap my merry bunch of friction folders all together for comparison

I've tried a Svord Peasant knife, and I wasn't too sure about what I thought about it. I bought one of the aluminum handle ones, and it shocked me how thin the scales were. I probably would have enjoyed one of the plastic or wooden scaled models.

Silly me, I forgot to say I put the locking ring back on after I peened the rivet pin to snug it up. Looking back on the way I worded it, it sounds like I discarded the ring. No, it's there, just not used unless dire emergency during the test period. So far, I haven't needed it.

I see. That makes more sense.

As for me, I keep my No. 8 Opinel locked when in my pocket. When I take it out to use, I twist open the ring, open the blade, then twist the ring shut, or locked. I just never thought twice about it.

I tend to only use mine for heavier cutting tasks -- and for that sort of use, I prefer the knife to be locked. For light stuff like string cutting, envelope opening, etc., I generally go with my peanut or Victorinox Rambler.

Lastly, who wants to throw in some money with me so we can buy Carl a cool beret!? ;)

That is a beauty.
One of the great things with opinels is that they are so easy to customise by yourself.

Arend, great job on reducing the bulk of the Opy. You made it look very pocket trim and functional. I may have to break out the sand paper again.:thumbup:

Carl.

That le thiers is really cool. What i dont like abou the svord and other friction folders is that the tang is large and esp. With the svord sticks out when in open position. That french knife looks mighty comfortable.
