sm or lg Sebenza?

I have both and the small Classic sees a lot more edc time than the large. Just my $0.02 worth.

I EDCd a Sm for three years before buying a Microtech LCC, which is similar in size the the Lg... until that time, I always considered the Lg tooooo large. I was a CRK dealer at the time and had a lot of sebbies pass through my hands and several "in stock." I REALLY dug the usability of the LCC and that was around the time MT started going downhill... so the prices for them "pre-loved" went up plus mine was the original Ti/CF version. I sold it to a friend/dealer at a gun/knife show in Austin, and bought a Lg Sebenza from myself. Somehow, once it was "mine" It really just felt perfect. My 2 Small Sebs just sat in a drawer. I tried to carry them from time to time, but was just not happy with the size. Now I am carrying a Lg 21 and I really think it is THE perfect knife. My 2c.

I REALLY wish CRK did not use the term "Large" for the Sebenza. After all, it was THE Sebenza until they came out with the "Small." Then they changed the name of THE Sebenza to the "Large Sebenza." It really is not a "large" knife. Should be more like the Griptilian... there's the "Griptilian" and the "Mini Griptilian."

Small and Large are adjectives, though, and Sebenza is a noun. A large ant is considerably smaller than a small house. No reasonable person would imagine even a miniscule house to be smaller than an enormous ant.

The way I look at the Sebenza sizing issue is this: The sheer volume of complaints about there not being a 'medium' Sebenza presents pretty strong evidence that the Small and Large are appropriately named. It would presumably be the medium size that would lack an adjectival modifier, not the Large. The knife of your fears would be the XL Sebenza - which would have a blade more like 4 3/8".

My opinion is that it took the release of the Small Sebenza for people generally to realize that the Large Sebenza was in fact not “THE Sebenza”… it was merely the Large. So unfortunately we have been deprived of THE Sebenza, as it would be too tight a fit to shoe-horn another model in between the existing two. Our consolation prize is that we get two knives for the price of one, as it were. Just as surely as we know Chris will never make THE Sebenza, we also know he would never have made two sizes if he’d gotten the first one perfect.

As is the case with so many things in life, a modest error and the effects of serendipity have left us in better circumstances than an initial bull’s eye would have. It is such a fine line. :)

Thank you all for your good advice. I think I’ll get the small for $325 and see how that works over the large for $400+. Also I have the paramilitary and like it over the larger Military Spyderco knife.

I was faced with same dilemma - in the end I just bought 1 of each - still can't decide which I prefer

+1 I have one of each size in my pockets right now. Sometimes I like the large, and sometimes I like the small.

FWIW I think the common thread in the differences aren't so much to do with the cutting edge, but with the handle. The blade is the same thickness in both models (which is awesome,) and only about 1/2" longer in the large sebenza. This is fairly negligable. Could you think of a situation where 1/2" of cutting edge meant life or death?
It's the handle in the large sebenza is significantly longer and thicker.

THE Sebenza would probably be a small sebenza blade on a large sebenza handle.
And we would shun it, for it seemed unnatural. Cast it out of our homes as a freak, a pariah...
But we would all know in our heart of hearts it would be what we truly wanted. And by God we would hate ourselves all the more for it...

How many other old timers remember the Puma Aristocrat series? There were about 5 diferent sizes of a stag, Buck 110 style knife. The way I see it, that served 2 purposes.
1. You could obtain a knife that was just about a perfect fit.
2. It was fun to try to collect the whole series.
Perhaps CRK would benefit from having a size or 2 more in the Sebenza series.

I think with all the customization options available, we have as much variation as our collective wallets can afford ;)

yup, just makes folks think the large is, well, LARGE. which it's not. too bad "regular" became a Sebenza design designation rather than a size designation...my "large" sebenza is still smaller than manyof my otherwise, un-sized folders

but, OTOH, i guess regular old automobiles suddenly became "full-sized" with the advent of the compact, so perhaps it's just the way of things?

Thank you all. Because I will not be camping or hunting anymore (I am 66 and a bit ill) I have ordered the small Sebenza.

I also want to thank BladeForums.com - General Knife Discussion for providing a “chat room” were knife enthusiast can chat with other knife enthusiast to obtain very useful information.

I prefer the small. The blade to handle ratio is awesome in the small Sebenza. Lots of blade for the size of the handle. The large knife seems less efficient in this regard to me.
