Small .22 pistol I'm thinking about

Second, my Smith and Wesson Custom Model 66 in .357. In my opinion, one of the best .357 revolvers ever made!

But -- if I had a choice -- I'd prefer a single-shot Downsizer WSP in .357.

And -- if I thought I'd "be needing a gun" a handgun wouldn't be my first choice.

Just curious................Do you routinely carry a gun on your person ?

if so, what is it ?

And if so, why would you NOT have a choice ?

i just got a new 07 Walther P22 for $230 last week. put about 400 rounds of various ammo through it yesterday, and it ran perfectly.

Downsizer went bankrupt several years back with orders unfulfilled. The WSP ("world's smallest pistol") was available in either .357 magnum or .45 ACP. They almost never come up for sale, and when they do the price is typically around $1,000 -- which is just too much unless you're a collector.

My employer is not handgun friendly, so discretion is mandatory. And even when I'm not working (65-70 hrs/wk) I don't feel the need to carry anything bigger than a NAA mini. I briefly carried a Titanium snubbie in .38 +P, but the weight was distracting and I didn't feel like investing in a shoulder rig.

If you feel the need to balance out your 1911A1 with a pair of extra mags for EDC, you go right ahead. I'm not planning on getting in any gunfights. I just don't want some degenerate to be able to shoot me and drive off unscathed. I carry for personal protection -- not to "overwhelm the opposition with firepower." Don't need more than a .22 magnum for that. I used to carry a High Standard derringer, but the mini weighs half as much and holds more than twice as many rounds.

i actually completely agree with Tyr. Rare occasion.

WHO DOES ????

They happen when you least expect it and usually involve MORE than one badguy. Great time for a tiny single action .22 stuffed in your pocket, ain't it? :D

I'd be curious how fast, really, you can draw and fired your NAA from your pocket and hit a moving target. Have you ever timed yourself?

I carry for personal protection --

So do I.

---not to "overwhelm the opposition with firepower."

Neither do I. Your statement actually means laying down cover-fire while you advance or withdraw. I'd rather draw, fire and HIT the target with one or two well placed rounds.

Don't need more than a .22 magnum for that.

But those rounds MUST have enough power to end the fight. You may only get ONE shot and it will probably have to be a pretty fast one. Unless one is very lucky, a .22 magnum from a short barrel isn't going to do it.

It's your choice, of course, I just hope you never need it in a moment of life and death.

David E made a lot of the points I was going to hit, but I also wanted to add that if most of our goals are to quickly stop a threat that we haven't been able to avoid, a .22 isn't the best choice. If you haven't been able to run/disarm a situation and it escalates into deadly violence, you want the fight to end now. A larger caliber is going to produce that outcome more quickly, and with less rounds. It might take a dozen .22 rounds to stop a BG (depending highly on placement, which would be more than a little iffy with a .22 pocket derringer +adrenaline) but will not likely take more than one or two .45 hits in the vicinity of center mass.

Secondly, my 1911 is way less of a burden on my hip than an NAA Mini in my pocket would be. It sits comfortably on my quality belt, in a quality IWB holster. It sits flatly and conceals with a t-shirt. No shifting, rocking, printing, etc..

Thirdly, it's a heck of a lot easier to produce accurate, fight-stopping hits with a full-size pistol than with a teensy derringer, regardless of caliber.

My two cents, and why I carry a 1911.

The 66 has been tweaked a little.

Trigger job both single action and double action
Bead blasted "battleship grey" finish
Extreme Duty rear sight by Novak
Custom Black Micarta grips by Lone Rider Custom Grips.

This is a real sweet shooter. Handles all loads with ease and feels really nice in the hand.

John and Jody (SP?) do some very high quality work. Somebody at the range let me shoot their Smith .357 Jo-Jo'sworked over, and it was capable of hitting clay pigeons repeatadly at 50 yards with .38 loads. Their specialize in AR's and 1911's and from what I've seen in their display case, they are capable of some very awsome custom work.

Amen !

Especially when you add element of either:

SPEED, as in speed of presentation (how fast you can get a shot ON target from the holster or pocket) as you may very well only get one shot. (per target)

FOLLOW-UP SHOTS: Fast and accurate follow-up shots for multiple assailants.

IE; how fast can you be with a NAA carried in the pocket? Oh, you saw this situation shaping up and you had it in your hand, cocked and ready to go? Um, ok.....and you're still there? Ok, how fast is your second shot on the second guy......you know, the one with a bloody meat cleaver in his hand lunging at you. How about the 3rd shot on the 3rd guy? You know, the one with a tire iron raised to crush your skull.....

A "good" run for someone not under pressure of life and death with a NAA one handed (who knows if we'll have both hands available?) would be in the one-second-per-shot range. That's a long time when you add it all up.

This is where most people say, "I'm as fast as I need to be"........because they have no clue how fast........or slow..........they really are.

Again, I hope anyone that carries a NAA or similar recognizes the limitations and doesn't expect it to do anything more.
