Small Fixed Blade Defensive Knife

Kabar 1117?

Think of it as a skeltonized and shrunk down kabar 1217 (USMC). Same blade profile, but only 4in in length. Single edge, but you could sharpen the swedge in the clip. And depending on what you meant by a full grip, it may qualify. Its almost a full grip in length, just doesn't have any handle scales. You could always make your own though.

Its also way under budget.

Anyway, was just the first thing that came to mind. Good luck finding something that works for you :).

I'm 99.999% sure. The state ban on "switchblades" was repealed a few years ago. You still need a CCW to carry one, at least until 2017.

Auto's have been legal for several years.. Just a guess at how long... maybe 6 years or so? No CCW required for automatic knives in Missouri.

Have you looked into the giantmouse GMF1? Seems like a decent deal for $95.00

I have the Ka Bar TDI, plain edge model. It is like a hybrid between push dagger and a normal knife with it's angled handle. It fits nicely in pocket, is easy to grab and you can actually do things with it that are not possible with push dagger (use it like a normal knife in a EDC role). Still when you hold it the wrist is in a strong position, like with a push dagger.

The sheath is so-so but I have modified mine. I carved some material out to get a better grip when pulling and put a pop rivet through the side of the sheath to get a better retention. The clip works and you can carry it either IWB or on the belt.

Still the Bradford Guardian might a better allround knife, but the TDI carries better than straight handled knives in my opinion. And there is a larger TDI available. I have tried carrying a karambit, but decided against it. Considering self defence use, if you know anything about boxing both the TDI and push dagger make a formidable combination.

I prefer pocket carry but made also a simple strap for IWB carry, this is easier on the clothes than the clip and easy to put on and take off:

I've been carrying the standard Ka Bar TDI everyday for about a year now and love it. It's not a horizontal carry out of the box, but I have seen sheaths that will cover you there. It's my secondary weapon (to by pistol), carried on my support side. Here's a video I did on the TDI recently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcdPRzwRWWA

there are lots of custom sheaths for the TDI for sale on ebay and other sites on the internet, they really dont cost much and are much better than the one it comes with.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I actually decided to buy a Spyderco Reverse. Now it's time to research and test out which orientation I should put it in. Knife is supposed to come today! Craig Douglas has a ECQC class pretty close to me in the spring so hopefully I can make that and get some training.

If you carry a gun I would recommend the opposite of your dominant hand just to the left or right of your belt buckle. It can be drawn forward by your dominant hand and reverse by your non dominant hand.

Well I just got the spyderco reverse and a few different sheath orientations and there's no way I can conceal carry this guy under just a t-shirt. The thing sticks out like 3 inches from my belt line. Maybe a smaller handle knife is what I need. But I can use it as a winter carry item under a coat. Maybe I'll look at the TDI or clinch pick for a little shorter handle.

Sorry didn't think about handle length, the clinch pick is concealable under only a shirt, I've never owned one but the TDI looks like it would be as well. Usually I wear a button down so I don't typically think about t-shirts.

Actually, just found that I can wear it with an IWB setup and the handle cant about 45 degrees. This holds it much closer to my body and the blade is angled enough from the belt to grab it cleanly with either hand. Definitely need to practice though!

That looks like a good option as well. Haven't even heard of that one before though!

Here is my Bradford Guardian3. I got it last week and haven't taken it off my belt yet. It's completely unobtrusive, and I plan to keep it there.
It does NOT print on my open t-shirt...very, very nice. The only horizontal carry that I've ever tried, and it's great. The sheath is lined with a plastic protector inside so it will stay NICE, and not all cut up. Retention is perfect, and would allow a very fast "draw" if necessary.
MINE IS NOT FOR SALE. :)

Robert, at Survivalsheathsystems does really nice sheath work in Boltaron and Kydex. All kinds of carry option but his IWB work is great.
Check him out...

The Guardian 3 also fits perfectly in the Bark River Mini Fox River sheath, if you like the cross draw option. (The sheath looks huge in the pic, but it's the same size as the horozontal Bradford sheath.) It conceals easily under an untucked t shirt.

The G3 above works very well under an untucked tee. So do Bob Dozier's horizontal kydex sheaths. I have and carry both of those under nothing but a tee (well... with pants, of course). Also, I was at Kennestone Hospital yesterday and I saw a guy with a TDI on his belt. His shirt was tucked in but the handle orientation looked like it would conceal carry just fine if his shirt was out.

Another thing to consider... and this is experience speaking... a slanted orientation like BRKT's Essential and mini-FR crossdraw sheaths conceals better than a purely horizontal orientation with longer handled knives.

How about an more inexpensive knife like a SOG instinct. 25 buck. With a cheap file you can add a little edge to the backside. You see, it will be seized as evidence the first time you use it. To me, what you are looking for is what I call an "OH SHIT !! " knife. Small, stabby and made to poke someone hard and fast to get yourself out of a deadly situation.
I assume you are a righteous dude, which means the coppers will be involved after you have defended yourself against the evildoer. Don't waste $$$ on a fancy knife.

Yes, it's definitely an "oh sh*t". Also carry a small folder so hopefully this knife will never really be needed. I'm starting to like the Reverse more and more luckily. I think you're right though, I don't want to spend any more on a knife like this.
