Small knife guys, please help me understand...

You are just doing stuff with your knives that they don't. Or that they use other knives for without telling you; or that somebody else does for them.

Not exactly Cadet territory:

I don't use a pocket knife for food. Got actual kitchen knives for that.

I understand using a regular fixed blade for outdoors stuff. But that was not the original question.

That's my point. You use other knives. I took it to the extreme, of course.

You can come up with similar and more practical examples of what you can do with a 4-5" pocketknife, that you can't do with a < 3" one. Any knife can open an Amazon box. To cut a > 3" radiator hose, for example, a longer knife is better. But then you'll tell me you have other tools for that, and I'll agree.

My hypothesis is that larger knives are always needed, just some people use their EDC for more/other things than others.

The fact that I used a small stockman as my only EDC for over a decade and did everything I needed to do with a daily carry knife, says that you are mistaken.

Small Tinker count? My favorite.

I carry a larger modern knife along with it because I can, rather than because I need to.

As a young man I carried a Buck 303 (3 1/4" closed length stockman with 440A blade steel) every day for well more than a decade. In those years I worked as a factory worker, truck driver, paint store worker, construction worker, lab chemist, lab engineer, and never felt I was under knifed.

It ain't the size, it's knowing how to use it. ;)

I think it depends on what you need to do. A little knife is good for a little task. How many little tasks does it take to dull your knife to the point of needing to take it to the stone?

I generally carry something around 2.9" if I am not looking to carry a larger knife, but even my smaller traditionals stay plenty sharp with use as long as I strop them after I use them. Most rarely need more than that because the big knives are doing the hard work and they are just cutting up apples or opening boxes, but they still do a fair amount of work so long as I don't thrash them

YMMV

*Edit to clarify*

In my experience, knives from CRKT are typically bereft of love, no matter the size.
For me I think it was just their availability at the NEX that had me keep trying that brand. Pretty sure one or both of my Enduring Freedom knives are a CRKT and or a Gerber. Those two brands were ALWAYS available. Benchmade or Spyderco? Didn't ever see them at the NEX.

My problem with small knives is the handle. I wear XXL gloves and small handles don't work for me.

My hands might not be as large, idk?
But I have large palms, and I really want full grip, or as close to it as possible.
Last year I struggled with many designs, but came up with this little guy.

After I get a few done that are patiently waiting for me, I plan to grind This. It's my smallest so far.... I'm thinking the warm, sturdy look of mesquite and that blueish linen Micarta will look Sweet. :D

It's still going to fill the hand. Not feel too small

I personally prefer a knife around 3”, usually my CRK Small Inkosi. Until relatively recently, people got through with small pocket knives just fine. A SAK Classic is a little small for me, I prefer a knife that can cut an apple in two cuts.

If a Case Peanut ever makes me a bloody mary then I will buy ten of them.

I was wondering IF that was a bloody Mary, too?
The lady in the background seems to be looking for his Pickle....? :p

We take them Very seriously here.
Lots of garnishments, beef jerky, shrimps, celery, chicken, pickles, beans, etc. etc ....

I do prefer my small Inkosi but I have a small Sebenza that I'm trying to beat to death. No matter what else I have I always have it in my left pocket.

I have a Small CF 21 that I also love. One of these days I will get a small PJ 31. I love the extra beefiness of the Inkosi, and I upgraded the blade of my 2021 Small Inkosi to Magnacut and it’s amazing to use now
