Small knife guys, please help me understand...

I have tried a few smalls like the Case peanut, the Buck 305 and a couple others but they are just too small for me to use safely and effectively. My fingers are not as nimble as they used to be and I fumble them if not extremely careful. I got them mostly as a novelty and when people see my 305 I tell them my Buck 301 had a baby. 😆 that thing is tiny! I think the 305 is discontinued now, I got it just before that time. For a small person or kid with small hands they probably are a fit but my old buggard up hands and fingers have had better days and I need more handle.

I always carry an Alox SAK. For the last couple years, I've been pretty much carrying one of the Buck 112s with the 3" blades, or occasionally the larger 110. I've come to really like the big fat handles that are comfortable to use. But a 3" blade for my main edc is about as small as I like to go.

I was also going to add that even if I could handle a small knife under 3.25 inches I would still carry a larger knife along with it. There have been more times when I needed a bigger blade than when I needed a smaller one and I can make do with a larger blade. It’s impossible to make a small blade perform like a larger blade if that’s all you carry. I am glad I live in a state where I can carry whatever knife I want any length. I don’t think I would want to live where I couldn’t.

Besides work knife (that I like to have in ”normal” size) I just keep this lil guy in the keychain. I simply just got tired of lugging a knife with me that I almost never really use. Most cutting tasks that happen are in home or work.
I do have to agree that I have never really liked the Classic SD blade either. It’s just too stubby and blunt despite being thin in stock. If you keep sharpening it will just dissappear.

My case for a tiny SAK is really to have scissors in a super easy to carry package. I’ve never used the knife or other tools. I could see using the other tools. Not the knife.

I’m with the dedicated 3” folder folks. Almost always a CRK small sebenza combined with an SAK Compact.

I have many knives which would be considered in the "small" range, which admittedly are either SAKs or Traditional slipjoints. I do have quite a few modern folders in the 3 inch blade range as well. I find them to be useful when I want to carry a knife somewhere having a knife might not be...forbidden exactly, but I still don't want to draw attention to the fact that I have one, you know? Also, when wearing slacks or other ligher pants, a small, thin, light knife is just the thing instead of one of my larger heavier knives I usually carry. And as I've stated (exhaustively, probably), my daily cutting needs are really very few. There's literally nothing a smaller knife can't do, necessitating carrying a larger knife. I just love larger knives, so I carry 'em!

But smaller knives do have their place, I think.

I like the small ones, normally two blade pen knives or Half congress about 2 7/8" to 3 1/4" long closed. I also carry a small thin alox Victorinox, mostly for the scissors.
