Small knife

My definition of small is a blade under 4 in. My definition of medium is a blade 4-8in. My definition of large is the 14.25in Ka-bar heavy bowie (9-14in). My definition of extra large would be a large HI khukri (blade +15in).

tenacious specs:

length overall 7 3/4" (197mm) blade length 3 3/8" (86mm) blade steel 8CR13MOV
length closed 4 7/16" (113mm) cutting edge 3 3/8" (86mm) weight 4oz (115g)
hole diameter 1/2" (13mm) blade thickness 1/8" (3mm) handle material G-10

at 4oz and a blade length a tad over 3" that IS small.

4 1/2" is at the upper range of normal for a closed folder. That's about the size of a closed full size griptilian. When a knife is as big or bigger than probably 80% of production folders I'm not sure how that can be declared small. But like I said, my definition differs from yours.

Well I would not call a griptilian a small knife either., Thing is so fat it feels like a brick when carrying.

How is the Spyderco Byrd Cara Cara with G-10 handle material? I was looking at thier knives and noticed it but am not sure it it would be any good.

I have 2 knives that were both less than $30 and have become favorite edc blades, the Spyderco Tenacious and the Ontario Rat-1. I find it hard to believe they were that inexpensive for the quality and features they provide. Better hurry if you want the Rat-1 it is out of production now and getting harder to find. Hope this helps. Cheers.

Is the Ontario Rat-1 black folder the one you were talking about? Is Ontario Rat the same as Rat cutlery because there logo looks the same. Now I have two, possibly three, different choices. These are them: Ontario Rat-1
Spyderco Tenacious
Spyderco Byrd Cara Cara with G-10 handle

Which one is the best because I am leaning towards the Spyderco Tenacious.

I also have a Byrd Cara Cara with g 10 handles. I forgot about that one until you mentioned it. It is also a great choice for under $30 but not quite the quality of the Tenacious or Rat-1 in my opinion.

I bought the Rat-1 with the polished blade just because I already own several knives with black blades just a personal choice. Ontario used to produce Rat knives but now Rat is producing them on their own.The emblems are the same like you said. Randall Adventure Training.

What is the handle material on the white dragonfly in colubrid's picture? All I see available now is FRN.

gary

For small, I'm thinking Boker Subcom. Handle's a little wide, but overall, it's a pretty small knife. If you want to go even smaller, there's always a Case Peanut with yellow handle scales, or, even smaller, a Spyderco Bug.

I don't know if that Bug would handle outdoor tasks too well, but I'd be confident using a peanut for most tasks. After all, I'd probably have a mora with me for harder tasks, and a small camp axe for light chopping.

Just get any Byrd by Spyderco, they're pretty much under $30. They're all Spyderco quality.

Tenacious or any Byrd would work.

Why does it have to be a folder? For maybe 3 or 4 bucks more you could get a Becker BK-11.

My favorite small outdoors knife is a Rat Cutlery Izula.

look at used but not abused knives, you'll have a lot more choices (bang for your buck) since its gonna be a user anyways.

What is your favorite small outdoors knife? Small knife wise I only have a multi-tool and swiss army knife. Those aren't that comfortable in my hand so I want to buy a small knife. I don't want it to be that expensive though.

If you want to stay around $30.00, you might look at the Buck Vantage series. They have 3.25" blades and they do one in 420HC, one in 13C26, and one in S30V (for about $40). They're comfortable in hand with a lot of usable blade.

Will the Rat-1 be affected by the new rule on knives? I have narrowed it down to two knives. Rat-1 $34
Tenacious $37

I am probably going to go with the Rat-1. I might eventually buy both but now I am only buying 1.

Get an Opinel no. 8. Hell, get two.

I was going to say get the Tenacious for sure...a GREAT deal!
But I didn't know you could get a Rat-1 for $34 though. My friend bought one when they came out and paid around $65(satin blade) I think. It was very smooth and seemed to be built for more rugged use than the Tenacious.

Can't go wrong with either at that price, but if you can get a satin blade, non serrated RAT-1 one for $34 I think I would go with it for sure!!! I've never handled a Tenacious but would think its much lighter, if that matters.

Were did you see the RAT-1 for $34?

EDIT,,,,If anyone has one with a Plain Edge, satin or black for under $40 I want to order one tonight. Let me know if anyone knows of a place please, thanks.

I was about to mention the Byrd Cara Cara in FRN or G-10 when I saw your post. I prefer the G-10 Cara Cara. Great blade that takes a very sharp edge and performs well with everyday tasks. If you want a little cheaper, check out the FRN models, still as good as the G-10 models bu lighter. Hope this helps.
