Small Knives....let's hear your views !

I can't wait to get my hands on one of those Bow-legged Joes - that's a sweet looking blade for EDC. That is probably one of my favorite small blades at this point.

I stalked the Fiddleback forum for a while before I got one, but it was well worth the wait and I absolutely love it. I alternate between EDCing it and a JK Handmade Knives wharnie kit knife. Both of mine can be seen on their respective maker's subforum. John (JK) has a real knack for these smaller blades and has quite a variety of models. If you think the Bow Legged Joe is awesome, you should also check out the prototype Runt Andy @ Fiddleback recently finished. It has a little bit shorter blade, what appears to be a 3 finger handle and one of the awesome handle combos that Andy is known for.

My two small ones are a Buck Smidgen (surprisingly useful for quick use) and a Mini Canadian. I have come to favor a pointier tip for a small FB, so I plan to ditch the Mini C (as good as it is) for something pointier like a Pro Scalpel, Mini TUSK or Custom Pro from Bark River.

I'm not a big fan of tiny or smallish fixed blade knives. Atleast the many ones I've used so far. Same for skeleton handles, etc.

Justin Reeder makes an Awsome pocket Fixed Blade & inside the pocket sheath  - 1095 steel 1/8" thick, Convex edge, cherry handles -

Sorry for the blurry pics, I was just learning the camera .

Well, I really like my Izula. It's probably my favorite production knife I've ever had. I dont know what those RAT guys do to their 1095, but man... that is some tough, edge-holding steel.

The Bark River mini Canadian and Little creek are both great little fixed blades.

Bear in mind the ruler in the pic is metric (ie scale is in centimetres / millimetres).

Kind regards
Mick

I've been wanting to try the whole tiny fixed blade thing, I like the looks of that wolf pup, and the izula calls to me, but until I have more spare coin, I'll survive wth what I've got.

Wow! Those makers are the cream of the crop. I use a small edc every where I go that I made out of O1, 6 3/4 inches long. I suprised myself with it. It takes a good workin out and fuctions great. Its not as pretty as some of the more experienced makers shown but it works great for me. But then again I made it so I guess thats a biased opinion. Here it is. El Feo. The ugly one.

This is my little knife and I EDC it. 2-1/2" blade, 154CM - Buck Alpha Dorado. The first one I bought was 420HC. I liked it so much I bought the second. No regrets.

As far as small FBs from makers go, I don't have any yet, but I suspect the W&SS Koster necker I have on order will be awesome.

I do have an Izula, and though I don't fancy the slimness and all-metal feel of skeletonized handles (thus the paracord wrap even though I'm not a fan in general), I've found this small fixed blade to be incredibly useful. It is easily one of my favorite knives.

As far as small productions go, I can't wait to get my hand on a BRKT PSK, Bumble Bee, or Little Creek for their more ergonomic scaled handles . For customs, I love that little guy in the top right of MtnFolkMike's pic; it felt great in-hand that one time I got to handle it. And the bottom right one in his pic looks mighty appealing to me too :D I'm a huge fan of that 3-finger small FB Brian Andrews made a while ago, and would love to pick one up sometime in the future:

(It's the same one in the middle top pic of your collage right Pit?)

In general, I love small fixed blades for their unobtrusiveness, control, simplicity, durability, and ease of cleaning.

ETA: By the way Doc, I love your classy set-up there

Thanks for the heads up and your thoughts on the BLJ. I keep telling myself I don't need anymore knives ;)

Which model is that buddy?

Pit, that’s a Pro Drop Point.

It’s a custom version of the Pro Caper.

6” overall with a 2.5” blade, .145” High Carbon Steel (50-100B @ 58Rc).

That little bugger strops up scary sharp.

I use a pocket fixed blade alot. So in my little stable we have
A CRKT Stiff Kiss and Peck,
CS ready edge, Bird &Trout, and tanto spike,
BRKT PSk & Micro slither
RAT Izula
Falkniven WM1.
The Stiff Kiss got a flogging ( very hard use ) It was the very first one I got. The PSK got a fair bit there for a while But my Fav so fay Has to be the Falkie it just keeps going and going and going.
We went away camping for four days at Easter out side the kitchen the WM1 did every thing except the throwing.
The Izula is new So it really hasn't had a chance to shine yet.

Small knives can be nice, but I usually carry a folder. Since realizing that if I'm in a survival situation I'll be relying on a folder I've taken to researching and upgrading the type or folder I carry. Would like to try a Becker Necker someday though.

Great thread though I 'm kinda backwards. I love the small fixed blades. In fact, the folder in my pocket is often bigger than the fixed blade I'm carrying. I only break out the larger fixed blades when I'm pretty sure I'll need them.

I usually carry at least one small fixed blade. I loved the BRKT PSK since I first saw it. It may, however, have found some stiff competition from it's slightly larger sister the Bumblebee. I still carry my OMF knife everyday.

I havent found a use for a three finger or two finger knife. I want my pinky gripping the handle.

I love small knives!!

My Izula sees the most pocket time, mostly beacouse of the sheath.

I love the look of the BRKT Bumblebee, but then I realized I have almost the identical knife in my David Farmer EDC. It is a no nonsence great cutter.

For beauty, I have a Fiddleback EDC ( I love his new Runt though.)

The Gossman PSK jr is another solid user! I like his new PSN model better though.
