Small Pen Knife for EDC?

If you're already carrying a Buck 303, you're at the apex already for a knife of that size. I have no better suggestion.

The case pen is very thin with a single spring
The blades are also thin for cutting
A nice sized blade and enough handle to hold easily

I recommend this one

A Case Pen knife like the one Neeman posted or a GEC Conductor would probably be my first choice. If you really wanted to be under the limit, you can also look at a Queen #21 Senator. The main blade is only 2" on this one. I don't think anyone will run away scared from this guy...

GEC Conductors, 2.5" blade:

I'm also a fan of the Half Congress. Another option I think. 2 1/8 or 1/4" blades (I forget which).

Gee thanks.

I already have a GEC addiction and now...thanks to the pictures...I have to go and browse the Conductors and the Half Congress. :D My poor wallet... LOL!!

Not only that, but now...here I am thinking I need a yella Buck 300 series, too. [sigh]

I finally went on GEC website and all I can say is WOW!!! Are their knives as nice in person as they look in photos and are they really expensive?

How bad is your knife addiction? Do you want it to get worse?

If you buy a GEC...you're doomed. LOL!!

Yes, they are that nice. The pictures don't do them justice.

I'm already hopelessly doomed, GEC would just be yet another brand to collect. My finances were a lot better when I just had a few Case folders and Buck fixed blades. I'm one of those with a few knives that get used, the rest are drawer/safe queens. I almost think the GECs are too pretty to carry.

Just pick one out and buy it. Wether you use it or not, you will be glad you bought it and besides, you know you're gonna get one anyway.:D

Seriously though, you owe it to yourself to get at least one GEC.

Good thread!

I'm liking the idea of a smaller knife for EDC more and more these days. Something that rides comfortably loose in the pocket or small enough to go in the watch pocket... getting tired of having all my pants looking like a ferret has been chewing on 'em from all the clip-damage! :D

Good choices all.

My small knife favourites are:

CASE Pen, very good slim knife in cv or stainless. Wish they would offer some other scales too, Chestnut Bone would be pleasing. I much prefer this to a Peanut as it's longer and single-spring.

GEC Conductor is a step up in price but a major step up in quality/choice-as the pictures show. A nice credible blade as well, plenty of steel in a small package. Buck's 309 is appealing, have both the yellow and saw cut black delrin. The latter is very gippy, a consideration in a small knife. The Bucks are well made and keenly priced, not everybody will like the narrower sabre blades though. I do. Böker do a reasonable Pen but it's a bit smaller than CASE versions. CASE and RR Mini Copperhead single springs are worth thinking about as well.

One last consideration for a small knife. Try a GEC 25 single blade EZ open. Better for the larger hand too. Good broad blade in Spear or Sheepfoot. There are single blade Clip 25s but not EZ Open.

Had never seen or heard of a minicopperhead until you mentioned it. That is a good lookin' knife. I've always been biased toward larger patterns but will plan to start using/collecting pen/peanut sized knives as they are more work appropriate for me. Also I did something by accident today I'd like to share. I forgot I already had my 303 in the pocket before leaving the house and dropped my Case CV Medium Stockman in the same pocket as the 303. While in hand and side by side the Case seems only marginally bigger (and a bit better in my hand), the blade lengths of them are near even, and carrying them both in the pocket made me realize that to me at least, the Case feels substantially larger in pocket, but I may be biased by being so used to the 303. It's amazing to me that a guy that used to EDC a 4 1/4" Case Stockman EVERYWHERE now thinks the Medium Stockman is too large in pocket.

It's hard to go wrong with a GEC conductor while they are a bit spendy the F&F is very nice (I've got one in burnt stag with a bail loop and I consider it too be the classiest knife I own) also if you're on a budget or just don't see spending a whole lot on a slipjoint the CV yellow derlin case pen knife is a cool little knife and hard to beat for the money.

Thanks for all of the input, I will be looking at some of these knives over time. The mini-copperhead and the GEC Conductor I find especially interesting. I did however recently acquire a Buck 309 Chairman's Series. At first glance it did not appear much smaller than the 303 I am used to, however upon closer inspection that 1/4" less handle length and cutting back the number of backsprings from 3 to 2 really make a difference in pocket, the 309 prints less and I seem less aware I am carrying a knife. It feels very good in hand, but I don't think I would want to go any smaller. There are no half stops (I personally don't like half stops) It really is a tank for a small knife, appears to be a scaled down 303, walk and talk is incredible. I've already done some modest to heavy cutting with it, so far I'm very impressed, who knows I may even eventually become one of those one knife guys.

The Case mini copperhead is a nice pen knife, about 3-1/8" closed. My 62109W has a wharncliff master blade.

Been pocketing an older pin under the bolster 303 for the last two weeks, except yesterday was a long pull 309 day. Interesting timing on this as I just stumbled across a stag GEC conductor last night and fell in love.

...and as far as you case penknife'rs are concerned...you had me at yel-low. (tee-hee)

mini copperhead wharnie, to die for...yeah I'm infected
