Hi, I am looking for a small survival knife. Something similar to the knife bear grylls uses, but without the $600+ price tag. Any suggestions would be great.
My budget is up to $300, thanks.

Check out some of the custom knives.

Dozier or Krein or bark river knives might be what your looking for.

Bark River offers tons of great options. You might also want to check out a Fallkniven F1, RAT Cutlery RC4, or a Swamp Rat Ratmandu if you can find one on the exchange.

All of these fall in your price range and are very well made knives. I would put any of them against what Bear carries.

Thanks guys, I have been looking at Bark River Knives and found one I really like. Does anyone have any experience with the Bark River STS-5?

I don't but I have the Bravo-1. This knife was scary sharp out of the box and is one of my favorite knives for field use. IMHO I like the A2 steel better than the 154CM stainless, but I'm probably a bit old fashion.;)

Check out the Highland model also. I think this will be my next Bark River for outdoor use.

Buy a Chris Reeve Shadow IV for $255. Hollow handle for survival items, excellent sheath. The best of the best !!!

Mike Stewart desribes the S-T-S 5 as a fighting knife designed in cooperation with the marines force recon groups. It is not intended as a general purpose knife. The marines version has a sharpened swege.

Fallkniven F1 (already mentioned) in laminated VG-10 stainless is about $100.00, the SGPS version is about $200.00.

3-3/4" blade, convex grind, extended tang, Thermorun handle.

A great knife.

I recommend the Foster Knives Wayne Fears Survival knife. It is lightweight but very rugged.

Red Scorpion Six has a Bear Grylls style knife. You have a choice of finishes, etc. and horizontal leather sheath. Fit and finish is acceptable. May be what you're looking for.

I also have a Barkie Bravo 1 which is very nice. Excellent fit and finish, nice ergonomics.

Hello Knifenut848 have you considered a Folder? My main blade I always carry when I am out in the Woods IE Camping, Hiking, Mountain Bikein is a Benchmade 610 Rukus, also if that blade it too big they make a 615 as well, both are out of production but still can be found fairly easily.. Its design is near Bullet Proof IMO.. Scales are made up of G10 and Micarta and has the AXIS lock... If you are wanting to stay with a Fixed Blade then I would recommed a Fallkniven F1... BTW I also noticed your location is Charlotte NC, I am from there... Good to see another person on here from the same place. Good Luck with your Search..

You can get a GREAT knife at that price. Swamp Rats, Busse, Siegle (SAR 4 looks awesome!) Koyotes knives in knife maker section are great, Bark River, RAT...all the biggees...hard part is choosing and stopping the buying! :)

Good choices so far. But it's interesting to me that no one has yet mentioned the Rat Cutlery RC-5. And then there's the Becker BK-2 and the BRKT Bravo 1 and the Ontario Ranger RD-4 and the Busse Combat BOSS Street (my personal favorite) and . . . the list goes on.

My Best survival knife is a Vaughn Neeley Survival/Hunter fixed blade...It was the knife of the year in 198?...Vaughn is remaking the design today but it might be a little more than you're looking to spend. 440c stainless about a 3 3/4 blade, roughing saw and hollowed-out scales...check 'em out at mileswelze.com

Good call.

This is essentially the exact same knife at a much more reasonable price

I dont suggest backing up a seller that clearly rips off other peoples designs. Not cool:thumbdn::thumbdn:

Anyways, I would recommend one of the makers here on the forum (check out the makers section--they have a lot of sub forums in here as well). They make beautiful custom knives at very affordable rates

I also think you would be happy with busse, Rat cutlery and bark river--each have many great outdoor blades
