Small Survival Knife?

Excellent suggestions here. I would check out the fixed blade for sale blog on the Makers forum. I am a big fan of Dozier knives for a semi-production knife.

I also like some Busse/Swamprat products (Ratmandu, SAR4) although I don't know much about the current offering from Busse (BOSS).

If you are looking for a fixed blade, I highly recommend the Rat Cutlery Izula (~ $50).

If you are looking for a folder, Benchmade mini Ritter :)

I recommend the Foster Knives Wayne Fears Survival knife. It is lightweight but very rugged.

+1 on the Foster Wayne Fears Survival Knife! Not too heavy but still very sturdy and it cuts real well. The sheath is excellent too.

RAT rc-4

Great fit and finish, extremely tough, low price. Doesn't have the looks of a custom, but its a survival knife, what do looks matter when its making you a shelter to live under?

Good choices so far. But it's interesting to me that no one has yet mentioned the Rat Cutlery RC-5. And then there's the Becker BK-2 and the BRKT Bravo 1 and the Ontario Ranger RD-4 and the Busse Combat BOSS Street (my personal favorite) and . . . the list goes on.

It's interesting to you that nobody recommended the monster rc-5 in a thread asking for a SMALL survival knife?

Thanks guys, I have been looking at Bark River Knives and found one I really like. Does anyone have any experience with the Bark River STS-5?

I do. I have one for my collection. It's a beast of a knife and very thick. The handle makes it extremely comfortable. It is in no way a small knife. If there wasn't a swedge on top of the blade it might be more usable for the woods. The BRK&T Gunny or Bravo might be a better choice for use in the field.

For a smaller knife, I like the Gunny. Just about perfect for me. Or Blind Horse Bushcrafter or Baby Bushcrafter.

Excellent question. As a basis of comparison, the Bears Grylls Knife is 3.9" long x 1.2" wide x .16" thick.

I generally think of "small" fixed blade survival knives as having blade lengths in the 3.5"-5.0" range. Pretty much anything from an RC-3 to a BK-2 could fall into this category. YMMV.

I define small as a blade length between 3-5"
I like the idea of a horizontal sheath and a strong handle material.
I am not a big fan of the handle on the Fallkniven S1, but then again I have never handled one either.

You might like the micarta handled version of the F1, or any of a number of offerings by Bark River. If you really want to go for the ultra then you can go over to Busse and pick up the Boss Street they are selling right now. Not cheap, but it would certainly serve your needs.

Yep. If it were my $300 and I was searching for a small survival knife I'd be willing to stake my life on, I'd also buy the BOSS Street. Come to think of it, that's exactly what I did. :)

Good suggestions! I also have the November special and the patch knife as well as the Tiger Knapp. All of them are good knives!

I read a couple weeks ago very elogious article in Blade Magazine about the Spyderco Forrester. They seem to know about knives ;) not to mention it's in your price range. :)
