Small Survival Knife?

My style is a .... lot less like the standard 'brit bushcraft' since I lean to straight spine and leuku influence. I'd recommend without any hesitation for the style of knife you are looking for, on the forums, Andy (fiddleback) or Ray Laconico.

I'm not trying to leave anyone out, just those two come to mind with that kind of knife style.

I will echo what a few others have said. For this role I use a Fallkniven F1 and Bark River Gunny.

I'd get one of the CRK one piece knives. They are going to stop making them so even if you hate it, you should be able to turn a profit in a few months. BTW-you won't hate it

For a Bear-type knife, +1 for the reasonably priced RAT RC-4. Tough, sharp and proven in the field ~;-)

For a great hiking knife - that comes with a horizontal belt mounted nylon sheath - consider the least expensive Buck Gen5 - the 005GY - ~$50-$60 mail order. It comes with a Dymondwood handle, nickel silver guard, and Paul Bos heat treated 420HC blade of 3". Termites served from it should still be chewy - and opening the envelope with your latest Amer Express bill including all of those lodge stays - should be within it's realm of uses - in the proper Bear Grylls style.

I also have the 'upgrade' 005RW, although I don't carry it much. I am not fond of it's molded drop sheath, even if it is a prettier leather. Also, the rosewood's grooves are uncomfortable. I do like it's CPM154 blade - a little more durable than the 420HC, and still SS. I have been known to tote it in the horizontal nylon sheath of the 005GY. It's velcro straps make it very useful.

I do have a myriad of other such knives - more expensive - typically, the bushcraft BRK&T - and longer than 3" blades. It's just uncanny how useful the 005GY really is - great slicer... ie, knife. Forget batonning!.

There seems to be quite a few votes for the Rat RC 4 and Fallkniven S1.
If you were only able to have either one of these for a survival knife which one would you choose and why?

Thanks.

(PS) I hope this will help the OP.

With that kind of budget you could get an RC-4, an Izula and a Benchmade Mini Grip, and still have some cash left over.

I'd go with the Red Scorpion 6 Adventure Survival. With a name like that its got to be awesome, right?

Shame the name doesn't have "Xtreme" or "Gov" or "Ops" or "Spec" in it.

F1...S1...what kind of names for a survival knife are those? And they don't even come in "Urban Camo"!

I picked up a Randall Fireman with no sheath for a little more than your budget. The measurements are the same as the Grylls knife. I call it my SuperScandi. It works well and it's the only 4" blade knife I've ever had that makes a passable chopper.

i've just had to make this exact same decision myself.

i'm going with an S1 based on price, materials, looks and design. it was a very close call btw and i daresay i'll wind up getting myself a RAT or two in the not-too-distant future.

i'm ordering an S1 blank (and a WM1 blank too for that matter) in the next day or so.

i know the RATs have an awesome warranty, but if SHTF in such a big way that we all really, really need our survival knives, then any warranty would only be useful as toilet paper.

Personally I'm all for the RC-4 (now called the EESE-4). I have had one for some time now and have used and abused it; still I have not been able to even do much damage to the coating. I am not saying that it is better than the Falk's I don't know if it is or not all I am saying is that for the price you will not be disappointed. But for the money get one of each a Falk and a RC-4(One is none, two is one)

Just reread article in Tactical Knives Mar 2008 on Charles May's OSK-1, sounds about perfect for what your looking for, just not sure of price, good luck.

Rat knives!! if u want a small one try Rc3 or RC4. if u want a bigger one try rc5. all great knives. rc3 runs u around $120, rc5 around $170. Life time warranty in the KNIFE it self as well. can't beat that lol
