Small, tough work knife.

Spyderco Dragonfly! What's not to love? Steel is AUS-8, which is still good in my book. Get any model for less then $70.

How about a Spyderco Spur? VG10 is a great steel. I would put it right up there with S30V. If you try a VG10 bladed knife, I can guarantee you won't be dissapointed. I'll see if I can scrounge up a picture of the Spur. I have one of these, and mine is plain edge. It's a real pocket scalpel, I'll tell you that.

Danbo,
GRRRRRRRRRRRRR, now not only do I have another to consider, but I have two choices, since the serrations are logically placed on this, I need to decide if I want PE or part serrated.. Thanks alot! :D

Now I need help deciding. What is the thickness of the spur? Does anyone know how thick the Kiwi is?

The blade is a bit to wide (tall?) for my taste. I think I like the spur better.

Here's what we have so far. (These fit the size etc. requirements)
1. Sypydie Kiwi in VG10
2. Tim Wegner Mouse in SV30
3. Benchmite in 154CM
4. Spydie Spur VG10

Thanks I didn't even know about the existance of two of these.

I trust that the kiwi and Spur would be very good quality, I don't know about the Benchmite and the Mouse.. does anyone have a review/opinions of these?

Also, If you own one of the above, do you carry it or did it find its way into a drawer? Good/Bad opinions on each?

P.S. I really appreciate all the help. I'm probably going to end up with more than one of them, eventually...

Opinions on these.. personal experience with any of them?
I need help. I can only get one, even though I want them all.

i bought a Benchmite for a pal last Christmas, and while it makes a great gentleman's knife/small task blade, i don't recommend it for a work knife. the diminutive size is only going to be a hindrance for jobs requiring a steady hand and some decent pressure. to that end, i would recommend the Spur, nice size, and much better suited for all-around tasks.

good luck!

I am going to put a second vote in on the Dragonfly Spyderco. I would suggest the stainless handled version as it has ats-55 blade steel. I know you said that you don't like it due to the wide blade but that is part of what makes this knife such a great performer. It has a wide flat grind. It is sturdy and fits with room to spare in the change pocket of levis. It also affords a much bigger feal than its small size would indicate. With a "street" price of $45.00 this is a great value. I highly recomend this little blade. It is like a short Calypso Jr. blade.

Tom,
The Dragonfly SS is a possibility. The wide blade bothers be more because I want more visibility near what I am cutting, though maybe it doesn't bother me that much.....

Ugh.. so We have eliminated the Benchmite and gained the D'fly SS.
Net Gain/loss =0 !

1. Spydie Spur VG10 (2 rec.)
2. Sypydie Kiwi in VG10 (2 rec.)
3. Spydie D'fly (2 rec.)
4. Tim Wegner Mouse in SV30 (1 rec)
XX5. Benchmite in 154CM (2-1=1 rec.)

Here's another vote for the Navigator - awesome knife, small and strong.

Spyder5co Navigatior. VG-10 blade small enough to be handy, large enough to be useful. Can be had from Smoky Mtn. Knife Works for $30 on closeout :D

The one at smoky is GIN-1, I believe. I have no idea of GIN-1 properties, but it's not too popular, which makes me wonder.

How about a SS cricket!!! small thin package, massive cuttingpower, but blade is VG10 ;)

Klattman,

My only experience with GIN-1 is with an ol' Micarta Goddard, but I can say that it's good stuff. If I had to compare it to my experience with VG-10, I'd say it would rate only a little less in edge retention.

Gee, thanks for all your help, guys, now I have to get _at least_ two...

P.S. Thanks for the cricket idea, but I don't like the blade or handle shape particularly.

Well, I ended up with a Spyderco Spur. It truly is a "Pocket Scalpel" I got it in CE for something different. The stainless gives it a little heft, and it locks tight with absolutely no blade play.. just great! I like it so much I want to buy another (or more).

Kudos to Danbo for that suggestion. And to the rest of you... now I have a list of others I'd like as well. :D

klattman,
Sounds like you made a good choice. It really is hard to go wrong with a spyderco. Now you have to try a stainless Dragonfly. :D
