What's the pull like on that one ?
I've never seen a knife with a nail nick extending into the tang and so close to the pivot before.
Yes! That was exactly my thoughts when I found that knife. It looks like there'd be no leverage in opening the blade with the long pull in that position. And, If this was a larger knife with a stiff spring, you would probably notice it. But, this one opens smooth as a baby's bottom.

Interesting.
Are you positive that it wasn't modified ?
The position just doesn't seem right nor does the fact that the nail nick cuts into the tang stamp.

It looks like a proper factory produced nail pull ( I don't actually know how they're done ) to me, but something just doesn't seem right.

Yep, this one is 100% legit and original. It's in a Cattaraugus book I have. And, I've seen quite a few knives from this time period that have the long pull cut into the tang. In fact, GEC made some Boy Knives that replicated the practice...or mistake. Maybe waynorth waynorth Charlie could chime in on why the long pull is cut into the tang, I'm betting he'll know.

Loads of old knives have pulls that extend into the tang 👍
Many old knives are seen with the pull running into the tang, as Jack has stated! It does not appear to have been considered a flaw, but an innocuous result of machining techniques!! I've never heard, nor read a rationale for such a situation!!
