Smith & Wesson doesn't know what steel is used.

Dr. Welch,

The 911 design came from Blackie Collins and is adequately executed. Blackie was satisfied, which speaks volumes. I've even given the knife to friends to stash on their sun visors.

Take care,

Mike

I forgot to mention that the 911 knife has recently been completely retooled and is now produced by a new maker in Taiwan.

I understand there were several problems with the original 911 that have been corrected. For example the window punch no longer flys out of the handle as Drew mentioned (Balistic knife style). The liner lock is greatly improved and seems rather reliable. Finally they are using a new serration pattern with large scallop reverse tooth serrations similar to Kit Carson's serration design. By the way they are wicked sharp. Also note they are not a copy of Kit's serrations. The tooth pattern came from a Taiwanese serrated cutting tool for farming/gardening.

The end result is a pretty good window breaker/seat belt cutter. I've never cut anything with it but I have it in my truck just in case of an emergency.
