The one thing I don't like about SMKW is their shipping is outrageous. Unless they are offering flat rate shipping, the more you buy the higher the shipping. Even for one fixed blade they charge by the price of the knife not weight. Plus if you are a Tennessee you obviously have to pay tax on top of high shipping.

Yeah they rip you off nicely on shipping I just noticed that in their Xmas catalog.

Shipping and Handling Charges
Merchandise Total Standard UPS Ground UPS 2nd Day Next Day
$0.01 - $50.00 $7.99 $12.99 $17.99 $29.99
$50.01 - $100.00 $10.99 $15.99 $20.99 $34.99
$100.01 - $200.00 $13.99 $19.99 $24.99 $39.99
$200.01 + $17.99 $23.99 $28.99 $42.99

They are like some 'bay sellers. They must make some of their money off shipping, except in proportion it's larger. I was told when they had the TV show it was counted as 3 separate businesses. Store sales, Tv and internet. I wish everyone would stop buying online until they get the message on there shipping. On some items they have the best price or an SFO you might want but sometimes other online sellerer have better prices. I suggest stop buying from them online.

It is not just SMKW; a few months back I was in the process of ordering a Civil War Commemorative Case pocketknife from a well know on-line Case Knife distributor - $10.00 for shipping a 3-1/2" pocketknife that comes in a little pasteboard box? USPS Priority Mail with box and tracking number is only about $6.00, and I consider that to be premium shipping. I decided that as much as I liked that Case pocketknife I wasn't going to be ripped off with a shipping charge - I don't own one yet! OH

That's the thing old hunter. If everyone would stop buying like you did from sellers with exorbitant shipping, they would have to change or go out of business.

I live by smkw. I have seen how they package stuff. It comes undamaged because of the extra $$ you spend, i wpuld rather pay more to get my purchase to me undamaged than have it wrapped up in a piece of paper rattling around in a loose box. But hey.... Thats me.

I've never ordered a knife and had it arrive packed like you say buckman, no matter how little I paid to ship. Not from a reputable company anyway. SMKW is ripping people off on shipping, you buy a couple of small knives that cost over two hundred and to show you how much they appreciate your business they tack on a hefty 17.99 to ship by slow UPS ground.

Buckman
I don't live too far from them either. I live in Knoxville but I surely don't buy online or by phone. Their prices aren't bad but if I buy anything I wait until I happen to be in Sevierville.

I used to buy from SMKW regularly, for many years. Mostly via catalogs and calling in my orders, right at the beginning of the internet shopping era. It was one of those small joys in life: get the catalog each month, admire several items, and order one of them. Okay, maybe two.

I stopped buying from them for two reasons: high postage and rude customer service reps. Call in an order and the ladies made it clear, on several occasions, that my phone call was annoying them. No problem, I can shop elsewhere.

Liberado:
I don't especially like shopping with them unless they have An SFO I can't get anywhere else as I have run into some rude employees at the sales counter but on the other hand I have met some nice ones too. I also don't like the way they did Steve Koontz when he was VP of the TV show. The man worked for Mr. Pipes over 20 years and helped build the business and the gratitude was a firing. He could have offered him another position since the TV show was a losing proposition but didn't.

That shipping is ridiculous. Guess there is a reason why I have never ordered from them. Shipping charges based solely on the final price paid is stupid. I dont mind paying for shipping but it must be reasonable. Like perhaps the actual cost of the shipping, materials, and insurance. It's just common sense.

I've made and shipped a lot of knives over the years and I truly appreciated every person who bought and paid hard earned money for my knives. Most were shipped free as 6 dollars was a kind of thank you for the purchase. I just can't understand the outrageous prices charged by some of these folks. In truth, tape and some sort of popcorn is the only cost as the flat rate boxes are free from USPS and it takes less than 5 minutes to package a box. I've done what Liberando and Old Hunter have done...I've stopped buying from those folks. It may sound petty, but I like to feel appreciated and that they value my business.

ive started to order knives from SMKWs and when I saw the shipping charges I didn't follow through..

too high. Especially when the place I order Case knives from doesn't charge shipping. and its almost if not as big as SMKW.

SMKW recently started selling guns and ammunition(not that I object to that). I wonder if it's because their knife business is slowing down. Last year I think it was Sept. their TV show went off the air and early in the year they fired their COO and brought back John Parker to take his place. They also let Steve Koontz go of whom I like. All that shaking sometimes means things aren't so good.

Winchester, im in crossville. I dont order either. I wait till i go up to pigeon forge or Gatlinburg, then i have to stop :)

The shipping issue is HUGE to me. There are many retailers who advertise free shipping for purchases regardless of state destinations and they are the
ones I patronize. There is no reason to shop sites that profit from excess shipping charges.

Watch for free shipping or flat rate shipping as the holidays approach. They've done it before.

Free shipping is packed as well as SMKW, why wouldn't they? It's up to the shipper to ensure delivery. The only shippers I've ever had poorly package a knife for shipping has been private sellers. In my experience a company just isn't going to throw a knife in a flimsy box with no padding. Even if shipping is free.
