For about a month now my Dad has not been feeling well. At that time, coincidentally, he was scheduled for a physical and different lab work by his employer. One result that came back showed his PSA levels elevated. He was placed on antibiotics. When he went for a follow up not much improvement had been made so a switch on antibiotics was made and he underwent a CT Scan. They mentioned that when the dye was injected it did not travel or go to the abdominal/pelvic area - they proceeded with what they were able to anyway and results were to be given on July 18.
His condition has progressed over the last 2 weeks since the scan. In the month or so that my Dad began feeling ill, he has lost over 30 pounds. He is weak and looks frail. He now has back and joint and hip pain. He tried to put a load of laundry to wash today and could not due to dizziness and nausea.
My Mom and I had asked him to call his doctor this morning and let them know how he was feeling. They were able to see him and review some of his recent blood work. From what my Mom told me, his PSA level should be at a 4 according to his doctor, and my Dad's is at 153. Doctor mentioned it could be cancer, a tumor, a really bad infection, or a number of other things. Unfortunately, the results from the CT scan will not be available to the doctor until next week Wednesday. He did prescribe a much stronger antibiotic with the hopes of some improvement from now until then. My Dad is also scheduled for more lab work tomorrow morning, as well as an X-Ray.
In all of my life, my Dad has always been the strongest person I know, mentally and physically. Never one to worry. I think this is the first time I have ever seen him worried. I cannot imagine what he must be feeling and, like a parent would for their child, I wish I could take this all - whatever it is - for him so he does not have to.
It's hard to be on the sidelines, not able to take it all away.
My Mom is taking it hard too, though she tries to stay strong in front of him. I've talked to both of them and have told them, while difficult it may be, to keep a positive outlook right now. Just have to continue doing what the doctor says until we know more. Whatever it turns out to be, we will go from there. We're hoping and praying for some good news though.
