Today, Harry, the dog in my avatar, is going to have a paw removed.

About 6 weeks ago he went lame. A couple weeks later an xray showed what might be a stress fracture, Two weeks later, and additional xray showed joint damage and loss of bone. We had biopsy done and another xray a week later showed a bone completely jagged, a bone with a hole in it and another bone starting to come apart.

Diagnosis is osteo sarcoma, we hope we're going to catch it before it gets anywhere else.

Sorry to hear that. I will pray for your dog's health and well being. Hang in there.

I knew another Harry... all the best for your Harry in the days ahead.

Dave,

I am glad that you were able to get the diagnosis and treatment for Harry. I will pray for Harry that this is all there will be. Dogs are well known to adapt well to getting around on less than 4 legs.

Where on the leg will they be doing the amputation?

Please keep us posted on Harry's programs.

Dave, feel free to PM and/or email me at rngdvm@aol.com
I'll try to help in any way I can. How old is Harry? I'm assuming you have had his chest x-rayed too? Gimme a holler.

As a fellow GSD owner, I feel for ya. Wishing you and Harry all the best. Remember, dogs are incredibly resilient!

What a shame. I hope the surgery saves him and I will pray for his complete recovery.

Vet called to say he made it through surgery fine. We should be able to pick him up this evening. Vet says he looks a little gruesome due to shaving and length of incision.

We picked him up last night.

They gave him a morphine patch and another injectable pain killer before we left. He's still out of it. Will wake up for 20 seconds or so if you say his name and pet him, then falls back sleep. Which is probably good.

He's shaved on one side from right below the neck to below the ribcage. Plus a couple of shaved paws for iv lines and such,

Smoke sent, hopes for a speedy recovery from this. Once he recovers, he should have some good quality life to come.

glad they caught it and can do something to perhaps stop it.....

mom called last nite and they had to put down their shep yesterday
he was fine and then bam hit with 2 types of fast cancer
only took couple days to go from bouncing around to so bad had to put down
its like losing part of the family

glad you were able to do something so you could spend more time with harry
dogs make great companions

Danbo,

Thanks for the update on Harry. Did the Vet say anything about how Harry will be able to put weight on that leg? Will he be fitted with some sort of shoe? I'm picturing some sort of leather harness that holds a cushioning device on the end of his leg. I have no idea what is done in this situations for dogs.

Mongo Vet? Any thoughts?

They took the whole front leg from the shoulder, so he only has 3 legs. There is no stump or anything. He had already been kinda hopping around on three legs anyway the last week or so.

We got him up this afternoon, we have a sling that goes under the chest that we can hold onto and give him support. With much encouragement he hopped to the kitchen drank some water and ate a small amount of food. Then we hopped back to the living room.
