A special python season starts tomorow in the FL Everglades. The one who gets the largest Burmese Python gets $1000 and the one who kills the most gets $1500. The state is trying to control the growing population in the Everglades, because they are not native to the area and they have no natural predators. They are eating the native birds among other things. I saw a picture of a python that tried to swallow an alligator and it blew up! Sounds like a job for the MOAD! I think I'll feel better with a 12 gauge shotgun and 357 revolver backup:D

What shotgun and loads will ya use for python? I think I'd want a short barrelled double, no.6s.
Just to back up the ruck, of course.

I got a 18" Remington 870 Marine Magnum, not sure about the best load for python. I always keep it loaded with 00 buck and a few slugs back up for home defense. I'm not really an experienced snake hunter:D

My mind is wandering with the possibilities! Wish I lived closer to Florida!!!!!

oh the possibilities! I had a pair of Burmese back in college, the female was a cantankerous ..... er .... yea. She had me wrapped up for near an hour one night when I tried to take her prey out of the cage when she was ignoring it. Evidently she was biding her time. She was nearly twelve feet at the time, and nearly 14 when she passed away from egg bound issues. It was her third nest. :(

Smart money is on the 30,000 Burmese pythons there not suffering much depletion. They are extremely difficult to see in the environment, but it's still a worthy cause.

Hey Dwayne, maybe we better bring you along on the hunt. We could use a python expert!;)

Shot size based on size of snakes:eek:

Maybe #4 heavy shot to penetrate the big uns I would think No lead would be mandatory in everglades due to water.;)

And i think thats smallest non lead shot is available.

Burmese python?
I think you have a bigger headache:

Either one of the pythons got horny and made babies with the other populations of Florida might be on the brink.

This! Should be pretty tricky hunting, being a nocturnal species and all. Good luck man!

This is exactly what I was thinking. #4 steel like you'd use for duck or steel BB like you'd use for goose would effectively kill a snake and protect the envirnment.

I've been reading about the python problem for several years now; glad to hear that the wildlife authorities are finally willing to try hunting as a potential control measure.

steel shot sucks! its hard enough to kill ducks with it, let alone something that could eat you.

Its why I said heavy shot;) ssome tungsten or REMS black cloud.
Id have #4 which is plenty over kill for most anything within such close range within few yards.

Id also want modified choke or smooth bore riot style pump gun with 8 shots minimum . I want most open pattern as possible:D

Problem with steel is that it doest expand and transfer shock and energy of shot. It goes thru em before they know it and lots a times unless a real head neck shot they keep going and die to far to find retrieve.
