Snake Season Starts Tomorow!

I dont understand this. Why do they have a season? It is an invasive species so shouldnt you be able to kill them anytime you want?

Does seem confusing to have a season since they are invasive. Possible first time they are allowing the hunting of them and then will turn into hunts for other invasive species like hogs. Or that this special hunt is for the cash rewards as well. May need to take a drive down to FLA to have some fun.

In Missouri we are allowed to kill hogs anytime by any method except during deer season. You can spotlight them bait them what ever. Problem is we dont have very many to hunt since thats kind of the point lol

I don't think it is a "hunting season". The way I read it, it's more of a month long contest sponsored by the state to encourage folks to kill them.

A bit like 'Whacking Day' on The Simpsons. Sounds great fun... can you eat them snakes I wonder?

No7 trap loads are my favourite for snakes .... they don't really take a great deal of shooting, more moving lead in the air to make sure a few hit home is more important !!! But really.... shotguns... I think a Pork Shank is about as much as the job would take... ;)

Yep, they are destroying the Everglades ecosystem. In 1992 Hurricane Andrew destroyed an exotic pet wharehouse in Homestead, and let about 900 Burmese Pythons loose. The population of those, along with the ones people throw out when they get to large to care for, have really exploded since then.

They are nocturnal, and mosty move from 11:00 PM, and 4:00 AM, and hide very well. It won't be as easy as many of the hunters think, but I sure hope they will be able to get a handle on them over the next decade. It doesn't look good though. Probably there to stay.

I have heard that snake makes a fine meal

Rattlesnake is OK, but not that good(IMO). I've killed a few, and deep fried them in small pieces. Kinda like chicken(yeah, everything does, lol), but has an oily consistency. I did it for a couple of parties, and some loved it, but it seemed the drunkest are the ones that liked it the most:p

I have never tried it but I would probably like fried snake if I was drunk :)

The Common Brown in that pic of mine above became an afternoon snack for my best mate and his two kids... ;)

I had a Burmese python about ten years ago it was six feet when my buddy decided it was too big for him to handle it was almost fourteen when it bite me on the hand and tried to wrap around me while I was cleaning its cage. Those boots just wore out last year. Big Burmese are VERY fast. As well as hard to see especially in an environment like the Everglades. I wouldn't dream of inviting myself but......like my two year old son says " I wanna go too!"

I would think bait would be the best idea. They like live prey so the pork shank is out. A rabbit would work or a chicken maybe and I'm thinking Paul's Hatchet!

I feel bad for the pythons!
I understand the invasive species....I do wish some could be given to devoted keepers.A lot of guys and gals would love to have a big burm.
I guess by name some have guessed I keep big snakes, the largest being a 21ft reticulated python.
That hurricane created major problems for the people and fauna of Florida........

I feel bad for the pythons!

I feel even worse for the native species they are wiping out. Everything up to smaller deer, and even some Alligator.
People that live down there say you would see about 20 creatures crossing the road after dark in a 10 mile stretch. Now they say you're lucky to see 5.

They estimate they are 10,000 to 150,000 out there now.

I know you how must feel, but they have to try and do something. I do hope most use a shotgun, as they feel pain up to an hour after their head is chopped off.

I just came home from florida a week ago, if i knew about this i may have stayed a little longer. My little dog would have made great bait.

Oh no...I agree. They were an introduced species by accident, not by their on free will.
I am really surprised that other larger more resilient ( my opinion) species of python have not cropped up.I own a 16ft African rock python that will eat anything and seems to be far more hardy than a Burmese python.

But i digress...if you must :( destroy something.....the NMFSH would do the job!

A special python season starts tomorow in the FL Everglades. The one who gets the largest Burmese Python gets $1000 and the one who kills the most gets $1500. The state is trying to control the growing population in the Everglades, because they are not native to the area and they have no natural predators. They are eating the native birds among other things. I saw a picture of a python that tried to swallow an alligator and it blew up! Sounds like a job for the MOAD! I think I'll feel better with a 12 gauge shotgun and 357 revolver backup:D

Those Reticluated pythons are bad news down there. Curse every irresponsible "pet" owner for letting them loose.

They really need to have an open season all year long on invasive species. Seems like that should be just smart thinking.

Aren't there some Anaconda's rolling down there too? Big suckers!

Make sure you don't go alone. You need some one else to free you if they wrap you up!

Guns and knives!

I might want a longer sword too!

Then I could go all Conan on them with my Dragon's Fang! (if I had one).
