Thanks W. I've been adding a few to the family but haven't had time to really enjoy any of them. I think that is about to change though. Work is getting back to normal so I should be able to get in a little dirt time soon.:D

Any of y'all familiar with O1 steel? This Brumby is O1 and all I know so far is that it's a carbon tool steel and that it strops to a screaming sharp edge!

I have no hair left on my arm and my right leg is looking kinda mangey.

This song is great, never heard it, Thanks Jerry D, for pointing it out to me. Ill be listening to more of their songs and at a minimum im getting the album this song is on.

Yeah. It's good stuff. With decent HT, it has very good toughness and it's easy as pie to put a very crisp, keen edge on it. It will tarnish and even flat-out rust if you look at it funny... depending on how funny-looking you are. Edge-retention isn't fantastic, but it's not bad. I like it at 58Rc for hunters and bushcrafters and whatnot, but some folks run it as hard as 62Rc for really fine thin stuff like straight razors.

I'm gonna have to stop.... I could keep going. :D
OK.... off to the computer to fix my links.

Edit #2 Fixed! So celebrating with more!

I've never used or worked with the stuff past annealed blanks (Note to self: Have to heat treat those ) but from what I hear its pretty comparable to 1095 cro-van since it has a few extra things thrown in unlike ordinary 1095.

Since I just bought my first 5 Beckers today, :D:D:D:D:D I went ahead and joined the "Fans of Becker Knives" group, member # 716. See my Instant Becker Collection thread for details.

So I don't get out into the woods near as much as I'd like. (Does anybody, really?) was searching online and found a free campground about a half-hour drive from Pueblo near Beulah. It's five miles of dirt road to get there. Think maybe tomorrow I'll head over there and scout it out and maybe next weekend do an overnight-er.

Eventually after I find a place I like, I'd like to go out but limit myself to just one blade for the course of the trip(I'll bring others along, just wont use them unless I need to). I think I can learn a lot about each of my tools if I force myself to use one for everything.

Sounds like a cool idea. If you really want to force yourself using only one blade, why not just take one and leave the rest at home? It could lead to frustrations, but it could also lead to valuable lessons learned. As you said, it's only a half-hour drive so if you really need it... you could still get it.

Never heard of the stuff. ;)

Damn G! Looks like you got enough O1 for everybody! :D

I guess it must be pretty good stuff if Todd uses it. I think I'll try this one out as a belt knife and carry it for the next week or so. So far the ergos are good but not fantastic and it does take a great edge. :)

O1 datasheet for the steel geeks.

...from what I hear its pretty comparable to 1095 cro-van since it has a few extra things thrown in unlike ordinary 1095.

That's a good comparison . O1 is one of the original tool steels designed specifically for better wear-resistance without sacrificing toughness. It has a splash of chromium and tungsten to help with thorough hardening, grain refinement and fine carbide formation, as opposed to a splash of chromium and vanadium, which serve basically the same purpose in 1095 CV.

Two of the nice things about both alloys are that they work equally well in big or little knives and are not terribly expensive, either as raw stock or in terms of machinability and finishing. There's a dang good reason so many really good knives have been made out of those steels, and I don't think either one is going away any time soon. O1 is used more often in handmade/custom knives because it's very widely available; 1095 CV can be a little difficult to get in the appropriate sizes without buying tons of it.

Sorry to go all nerdy on y'all this early. I now return you to your regularly-scheduled snarktastic programming. :D

I pretty much agree with everything said about 01 except that if you look at it funny it will rust, That might tell you something about just how funny looking you are Terrio. :D While its true it will rust, if minimal care is taken you wont have a problem with it. Dont leave blood from game (or whatever) on it and dont put it in the sheath wet, common sense stuff really. worse case senerio even if it does get some rust on it, hittin it on a buffer or scotch brite pad will back to new. People need to remember there is no perfect steel, and no such thing as a true "stainless steel" theres trade offs with everything in steel. IMO. 01 is a excellent all around tough steel, its been around forever, and to James point. its not going anywhere. If I could add one thing that I havnt seen mentioned. While it is chemically similar to 1095, one of the biggest things that stands out and makes it different is its maganese content. its about 4X higher than other carbon steels including 1095, and that is huge. really puts it in a higher bracket in my book, but thats just my opinion.
