Did somebody mention cast iron??

Picked up this Griswold #3 last weekend and cleaned it up last night:

I think this is the "newer" style of stamp. We have a #6 and 8 with the other style.

Here are the 3, 6, and 8 all together with a crappy Wagner in the background:

Got another #8 last weekend too, but it has a lot more burnt gunk to chip off before it can be used.
The Griswolds were not simply cast and sold. The casting was then ground inside to a smooth flat finish, like any quality pan should be. By contrast, the modern production Wagner has a pebbley undulating surface which causes food to stick and is very hard to scrape clean.

The baby one I got is undulated and not smooth. I guess I need to start looking for some Griswolds. I want to start using cast iron more, I really do prefer it, when I can.

HOLY HELL! I just was looking at Griswolds. They have a #5 that is being sold for $750... Are you frickin' kidding me man?!?

'They' are crazy. that's looney. go find flea markets. I've paid probably $100 total for all four over the last 5 years. Don't help these jerks inflate prices.
Someone called these things 'the pans that won the West'.
(I'd love a #5...)

But if you want good MODERN cast iron, pick up some Le Creuset. It's enamel over cast iron. Good stuff. spendy, but not like stupid collector spendy. Sometimes you can find that stuff used too. Try the thrift stores, flea markets, etc.

Damn shame to see Chris Kyle was killed. RIP, he was a great soldier and from all reports a great man.

Indeed, and a good writer too. I enjoyed his book thoroughly, and was very sad to see the news. Smoke and prayer for his family.

Hey Dubz, do you plan on cooking much with it or primarily heating up water for dehydrated stuff?
Honestly, more boiling water then anything. I just thought the small "frying pan" may come in handy if I ever needed it.

I have a great cast iron enamel dutch oven. I need to start hitting flea markets.

Honestly, I'd mix and match. The Ti stuff is super light and great for boiling water but sucks at cooking. It's bad about hot spots and it sticks pretty bad. I think anodized aluminum cooks a little better.

A primus tea kettle and the lid of one of those swedish mess kits (like you gave me) is a damn nice setup really.

Superbowl on two tv's and a bowl of deep fried bacon and french fries.

Rockin' two here too. Bacon wrapped water chestnuts, sausages glazed with sweet baby rays hickory and brown sugar. Home made potato salad. Crescent rolls.

Nice pass Flacco.....

I did read that the titanium pans weren't very good for frying.

Ti pans/pots tend to be too thin for frying. In a nutshell Ti pots and pans are light because Ti is strong so the pots and pans can be vey thin (and therefore light) which results in scorching. The opposite of what happens with heavy cast iron or thick aluminum.
