"sniper rifle" investigation asked

As I recall the famous Marine sniper Carlos Hathcock used a Winchester Model 70. Similar to my dad's deer hunting rifle. I'm sure he also used other rifles.

Sniping and hunting are not that different.

If we choose to allow our citizens the right to bear arms, we must be willing to accept the danger of a citizen using those arms inappropriately. For every benefit there is a cost.

I feel, as many here do, that the benefit is worth the cost. In the final analysis, I believe that our families are safer in an armed society than they are in an unarmed one.

But I believe that man is by nature good, also. That is why I trust my neighbors to be armed.

Kis:

That would include all the SUVs the urbanites are driving, yes?

For, as well all know, they are really off-road military personnel carriers--artfully camoflagued, yes?

SSHHHH!!

The bill must be written to only mention Hummers by name, and describe their bannable attributes in such generalities that after it's passage any vehicle we don't like may be arbitrarily interpreted as illegal.

It won't work if everyone knows what the true agenda is. (Although recent examples of firearms bills begin to suggest otherwise).;)

Of course members of Congress are exempted...

Just like many of the most vociferous handgun opponents in Congress are accompanied by bodyguards with concealed firearms while about their business of banning handguns. Or being driven somewhere in a Lincoln Navigator to rally for stricter emission requirements. Not to mention when they occasionally return from Washington and reside at their ranch or 8-9 bedroom house on a few acres to "see what the constituents think" and tell us that the solution to urban sprawl is that we all live in "multi-family" dwellings.

Have you been out fishing for the last 20 years or what?:p

>> firkin

you've hit many of my favorites, firkin, but you left out roadless access to the National forest, logging bans, and decrying the deforestation of the rain forest while tastefully furnishing their homes in Brazilian Oak.

The beauty of an armed society is that even if they are not good, the consequences of being bad may be unacceptably high.

If these shootings turn out not to be a terrorist.
I would brand the SOB a coward. He has neither the Balls nor intestinal fortitude to go after who he is really mad at.  :barf:

I thought that a terrorist would have made a declation of sme kind by now...

If this were a Hollywood flick he would have given us a full manefesto by now. But, since he a real terrorist, focused on his mission, I suspect he is just going to continue shooting until he runs out of luck. I would bet he doesn't even wear a goofy uniform, or look like a rabid madman. He is leaving the declarations to his seniors.

I agree with not2. He (they) will not wear the nazi spin off uniforms of hollywood. We may not know until the end what they are, besides depraved. I'd thought since the card it meant they were loonies, but now I'm growing fearful it is terrorism. It is unusual in the field of loonies for them to risk a killing a day. This would be near the end of their careeer and we haven't seen the normal build up.
I'm worried. These times we're living in, bad science fiction, getting worse.

The sniper is certainly terrorizing the area.

If any link to muslim extremists is found, expect a powerful deluge of bilge like this:

Muslim holy warriors should use lax firearms laws in the United States to get sniper and military assault rifle training according to a jihad training pamphlet posted on a web site that has been used by a most-wanted Al Qaeda fugitive. The Violence Policy Center (VPC) has obtained the full text of the pamphlet, which has also reportedly been found in abandoned terrorist safe houses in Kabul, Afghanistan. The pamphlet informs jihad trainees, "In some countries of the World, especially the USA, firearms training is available to the general public," and that "it is perfectly legal" to obtain weapons such as AK-47 assault rifles. It urges would-be warriors to take advantage of those lax laws and learn firearm fighting skills, especially sniping and assault rifle firing."

http://www.vpc.org/press/0111jihad.htm

The compliation of a database of all certified to purchase diving air, justified by some nebulous communication about terrorists employing SCUBA in US ports, met with nary a peep of debate.

The anti-firearms groups will have a field day, and long-range target shooters and probably those learning to just properly use firearms will be the subject of a new level of BS and propaganda. "Only a terrorist needs to know how to do that--Stop them"

Munk, yeah, kinda forgot about the rain forest example, but there's so many to try and remember. Besides, it gives me dyspepsia.

yeah Firkin, the newest is not wanting third world nations to develope anything, even plumbing, because of the impact on the 'environment'...which in many cases means starvation and poor lifestyles by the affected, but a moral feather in the cap to the enlightened ones, grandchildren of nations who spent their own resources to educate their children and bring them a better life.

I'm thinking shooting over the cop's head means these guys know they will be caught and don't care- the jiad argument again. btw, long distance 'sniping' means about 100 yards or a little more, not hundreds. 100 yards the media has characterized as expert.

"sniper"? What the hell is that? a sniper is someone who waits long hours in hostile territory where discovery means death or torture. He waits for an opportunity against his target and then must get out. How in hell can you compare that to slobs who shoot unarmed civilians in the head or back?

As a Brit, over the last 25+ years I have seen events no where near as bad as this change our gun and knife laws. If any of you guy's come over here and are anywhere near Victoria railway station or any of the big stations in London, look around for a bin to throw your rubbish in...........you wont find one !!! Why ??? because the cowardly bastards in the IRA thought it was a good place to hide a bomb that would then kill inocent people. I hope to god that the DC shooter ( I wont grace him with the title "sniper") is a terroist, and he is caught quickly and dealt with in the same way as his poor victims, without mercy. If he is just a nutter then be prepared to see the men with the power crack the whip of over-reaction.
just hunt him down and stop him quickly. :(

Nick and others are right, this wuss with a few screws loose does not deserve to be associated with the term sniper (CNN and the rest of the news media need to learn how to use a dictionary), rather, "psychopath" is more apt. I hope this person is caught soon for justice'sake.

Kids:

Just got back from the honeymoon - Italy. This thing was all over the news in Europe, but without all of the predictable commentary.

RE: the DC area - DC basically doesn't allow firearms possession (it is possible to own certain long guns, but the local authorities won't tell you that). VA is a right-to-carry state. MD is somewhere in between - closer to DC.

Basically, I'm praying that some armed citizen in VA stops this guy and any accomplices. I can't think that this will end any other way. This guy/guys are operating in such a way that I doubt the LEOs will be able to get him/them - they can't be everywhere at once. Unfortunately, I think that a number of other people will be killed before then.

The anti-gun folks have rolled out this "sniper-rifle" thing before. IIRC, they backed-off when people realized that their definition of "sniper rifle" included the type of long-arm that is commonly used for hunting.

Very interesting. The version of the BBC news which is available to me via PBS has been burstingly pregnant with explicit and implied anti-firearms commentary. Which I expect.

2) In some previous posts on this thread I, like others, have been guilty of gracing this individual by describing him as a sniper. I was completely wrong to do this if the definition of sniper in the military sense is accepted. I slipped into the convention of news media. I note that the guy who stole a tank in San Diego and drove around in it causing great destruction was never referred to in the media by a title that would describe a legimate operator of tanks. Perhaps that is because there is not a simple one-word term to describe the responsibities of this position in common parlance.

Can't really think of a one or two word description to refer to this sparticular person(s) specifically, but I pray that they will be stopped soon/now.

I see nothing wrong in describing this person(s)as a "sniper". that is after all what they are doing, and it should not cannote negatively against the military. If we can call the people who flew our airplanes in the WTC and Pentagon "pilots" we can certainly call these guys "snipers"

BTW, I suspect the "him" may very well turn out to be a "her". A woman would be far more likely to evade the typical profile, and would draw far less attention under those circumstances. As long as she neither looks like a Hollywood starlet, or an old hag on a broom, people are just not going to take a second look at her. Witnesses would simply see her and file her away under "soccer mom", not worthy of further attention. A woman would also perhaps be more likely to select a light caliber like the .223. The light recoil would mean a lighter and more compact rifle more suited to a smaller frame individual.

At any rate I wouldn't worry too much about this stuff. The war will be starting soon, and when it does, any further updates to this story will be carried deep within the back pages. The story and the hype will soon disappear from the front stage.

another perceptive and penetrating post by n2s.

I find it a good thing that the acts of this peron(s) are rare enough that there is not an existing term to apply to them.
