Between yesterday and today we had a forcasted 20 cm of snow (8"). The temperature is just perfect, hovering a few degrees below freezing, keep the snow nice and dry while at the same time not be biting cold. I have to say that if I'm going to have winter, I really want winter. I don't want the blah blah grey, dirty, just hovering above freezing weather crap. I want to have snow! Thankfully, we managed to get a bit of the fluffy stuff back and all in time for the weekend!

So, where else to go, but my favorite spot and Magnessun's old tracking grounds!

This was the morning sun, just to give you a sense of the light. Most of my camera settings (EV) were jacked up by +0.3 to give me a bit more colour and vibrance to the rest of the shots.

There were plenty of deer and rabbit tracks. The problem with two hyper dogs is that it is hard to crouch down and investigate tracks as they get all excited and trash the snow! Something was rubbing here.

Today, I brought along the new toy. The SOD. Of course after sticking that elephant in my pack, I had to think twice about carrying too much more steel. I gotta start doing more squats I think!

The SOD is really comfortable in the hands wearing mittens. Also great in the hands during the cold without gloves as the Resiprene C provides a nice warm, insulating layer.

A couple of dead trees. From one of them, I was able to peel back a large chunk of bark. Reminded me of all the things SourthernCross loves to use bark for. As I pulled the bark, a little hibernating critter was under there. I can just see Less Stroud popping that in his mouth and telling us how he can just feel the energy streaming back into his body.

Great pics once again buddy, lovin the one of Max !!!

Glad your likin that SOD, should be a great tool for smashing into those Fatwood stumps and prying them apart !!!

Hey buddy..... I long to ge out there.... we have to hook up sometime soon!!! Eric (Normark) and I want to do an overnighter..... I'll keep you in the loop.

Nice pics. Your pooches look like they're having the time of their lives.

Question: what's the smaller knife? Looks really useful.

That would be a customized Breeden Kat knife. It is his traditional kat with his PSKK handle, handle in osage orange. For ergonics, it is my favorite knife in the small blade class!

I wish we had snow like that around here :( It 's 40~50 deg. & rain here or 18~20 & clear  Oh Well ! Thanks for sharing the Great pics 'Ol Bud !

Kgd, Great picts. My wife, son and I went out again we got another 8" or so inches of snow. It was a blast. On the way home heard many branches falling.

I wish I could have done some knife testing like you did. I usually take my Outcast for winter hikes. It is a bit heavy but I feel more secure in the snow with it for some reason.

We got about 10" where I live and I went out back only to have a huge amount of snow fall on me when the wind blew. I guess that will teach you not to walk near tall pine trees.

Anyway, looks like you had a lot of fun. Nice picks. Dogs look like they had a lot of fun as well.

man thats a nice spot K, I can tell you starting to like that SOD. Yeah, your in for big knives now, once to taste'em you cant go back. :D

A few more shots from this morning...

Great pictures kgd! I agree, if it's going to be winter and cold there had better be a bunch of snow around to make things fun. Cold and grey gets old very fast!
