so educate me...how do I become a knife snob?

Most people don't need a knife, and billions on non-knife carrying people the world over get by just fine
Yes , but they also probably have one in the kitchen , cooking knife , steak knife or butter knife , its still a knife .
My wife doesn't allow me in her kitchen , therefore I have to carry a knife. That's my story anyways ;)

of the 4 snob types , can't say I have ever been a brand snob , but am guilty of # 2 and #3 to a degree.

Dont forget there is always deviations of these types , like for example , the safe queen guy who has tons of knives that are never used but can tell you how good they are without using them. As if by magic you can tell just by looking at it. :)

Don't forget the " tip up carry " snobs , like me ,I prefer all my knives to have clips that allow me to carry tip up. Though recently I have went to slipjoints and lockbacks with no clips , problem solved.

and you are a certified knife geek ( not snob ) if the word KNIFES irritates that crap out of you when you read it in someone's post.... the plural of knife is KNIVES !
hmmm maybe we should we call them a Knives Maker ? ;)

From what I've seen, at least on this forum, you become a "Knife snob" if you have the temerity to even insinuate that someone, somewhere, using newer technology and newer steel, just "MIGHT" make a better knife than a Buck 110. :p

OMG:eek: You are right on about that one:thumbup:

I love Buck knives,BUT the 110 is NOT the greatest kife in the world,or ever made IMO(& many others,I suspect).

An American icon?YES.A great knife?YES,but that's as far as it goes with me anyway.

You forgot the F1 snobs.

They have a wide collection of knives but only use the one and only true survival knife as certified by some air force that has never ever fought a war and can probably count its wilderness survival encounters on one hand. And the steel is laminated whatever that may mean.

There's probably a maker/manufacturer snob for every one that exists.

I don't want to name names.....you know who you are:D

I disagree with most of you here. I don't think I've seen much of what I call real snobbery on these forums. People thinking one knife or steel is better than another isn't necessarily snobbery -- it's just an opinion. Some people have strong opinions about these things. But I rarely see folks implying they are superior because they use a certain knife, steel, sharpening system or whatever.

There are also a number of folks here (I'm not one of them) who can afford to spend quite a bit of money on customs, Busses, Sebenzas and the like, but I don't recall many instances of them acting superior or rubbing other people's noses in it. And the whole "is it worth it" type of thread is, to me, just portrays disagreement about values, and not snobbery.

Really, all this snob talk is snobbery! ;) So, I respectfully dissent.

I guess anyone not totally ignorant of all things is a snob? :D

Snobbery is in the eye of the beholder.:D How much do you care what someone else thinks?:D:D:D

Get on board the magic Busse, take it until you arrive at Sebenza square, then walk over to the mall and throw all your Cold Steel ninja shit into the fountain!!! :D

I agree with what he said.

haha, just post something serious that you dont know a whole lot about but seriously want to learn and they will come out of the wood works. you might get 40% people trying to help you and the rest being chumps. (there are quite a lot of good guys on here but it seems they stick to certain sections) -

Maybe I'm not reading you correctly, but does the OP's question seem like a serious one to you?
(He started ducking before he even finished the question!)

Unfortunately, I think you're correct. We're not all expertts on every subject, but if someone is seriously trying to learn, they should not be treated with contempt.

When I first joined this forum, thank God that I was able to find, and e-mail Joe Talmadge, Jerry Hossom, Cliff Stamp, Thom Brogan, and a few others, and get good info back by e-mail.

Not everyone suscribes to knife magazines, or has the money or desire to buy every new knife and test it for themselves. That's why they come to this forum.

If someone asks whether a new brand of knife is as good as a Case or Ka-Bar, he should get opinions based on experience and/or research, not insults or sarcasm.

And if a poster asks a question about a particular knife, he should get answers about that kinife, not 3 pages of ranting about the maker or seller of the knife. If a knife meets my standards, for what I'm going to use it for, I really don't care if it was made by BOZO the clown.

The first time I asked if anyone had experience with a particular CS knife, instead of any answers, I got three pages of posts ranting about Lynn Thompson.

And ya know what?? I really didn't ( and still don't) give a damn about LT, I just wanted to know a little more about the knife.

I've read of knife snobbery on the forum and since I'm new, I want to know what I need to do in order to become one...

Ok, I'll duck down since this may become a heated argument that I'm not baiting here at all.....just curiosity.

I currently have three knives (I always lose them before I can create a collection so let's just say that I've had dozens of knives over the last 25 years). My Ti-Lite with an aus8 blade stinks IMHO due to a bad heat treat. My Kershaw Leek and Benchmade Stryker are great knives.

What else am I missing here....why type of knives do I need to seek out in order to create an opinion on which ones will generate this snobbery? D2? S30V?

Is it that one blade material is better than the others and folks die defending their blade material, or is it one of those 'Benchmade is the greatest knifemaker in the world and nobody can compete with it' attitude?

Ok....I'm going to duck down and hope it stays civil....

Use a bunch of different knives.

Observe how some perform a certain task well, other less so.

State your findings/opinion when relevant to a discussion.

Pretty soon, you'll be labeled a "knife snob" by someone who disagrees.

When you inquire about a certain knife , like it or not , you are going to hear good points and possibly bad points about the knife , it's construction , it's performance or lack of , and yes also about the maker/manufacturer.

Would it do you much good if all you were told about was the knife ? So let's say it is a good knife but the maker/manufacturer has lousy customer service , or worse yet , takes it in for refurb and has a habit of not delivering it back to you , or takes months , perhaps years to get it back to you ? You wouldn't want to know about that ?

I think most here do. What I like about the forum is the information isn't spoon fed , like you can get from some articles in knife mags. Every notice how many articles claim a knife to be the best ?

Good or bad , you will hear about it on the forums , from all angles , and it is from that info , that you take what is important to you and filter thru it and make your decision.

If that isn't of value , then you could just call the manufacture , I am sure they will tell you how good their product is...unbiased of course. :)

Seriously though, there ARE a number of CS. haters in here. But that don't make em bad people.
They've got their opinions and you've got yours.
They've got their knives and you've got yours.

Just one more example of the universe unfolding exactly as it ought to!

And just for the record, I carry my CS. Voyager more than any of my other knives, . . . That's right, I'm a ninja, I know it!!

PS. I like malls . . . . . . . they have lots of pretty girls. :)

Just because someone has an opinion, that doesn't make them a "snob."

Now if someone stops talking to you because your knife is inferior to their's, that's being a snob! :D
