So..how do you guys react to people trying to out do you? (guys who go "mines better"

I seem to be the only knife afficianado(sp) in my neck of the woods so I have the best and don't have to worry about someone pulling out their knife and claiming it better than mine!:D:D

Same here. Once one of these knuckleheads find out how much I spend on knives they then to call me an idiot. They fail to realize how importan that knife really is to us and the roll it has played throughout history.

I challenge everyone that challenges me for carrying a knife to live a week without a knife of any kind and see how far you get.

Back to the original topic. F'em bro. The best knife is the knife that works for what you need it for and does it well.

Have fun with what you have and F the haters.

I find it best to fly under the radar with this kinda stuff, especially public places and around sheeple. The less people know what I've got at home or in the truck or at my office, etc. and what I'm packin or am not packing the better. No one needs to know what you or I have at home, etc., or on my or your person. Someone pulls something out, wow cool where'd you get that, I may wanna get one of those, or just ignore it all together.

Remember this also ITS NOT HAVING WHAT YOU WANT, ITS LIKING WHAT YOU'VE GOT

I offer to sharpen their knife for them. when they try it out the look of amazement on their face is worth it.

maybe i cant afford it. maybe i dont want it. maybe i dont care. either way, i just let them have their moment.

This reminds me of a knife shop I used to go to....

I walk in and immediately the guy behind the counter says hey what cha carrying? oh I say a manix, he says oh thats a nice knife but its no Strider...I just shake my and continue looking at knives.

There is no point, people always think more money equates to better or like everything else fancier is better. I think about the poker runs and how many Harley's and "customs" I see on the side of the road with a guy angrily shouting into a cellphone or kickin the ground as I ride by smiling on my "japanese knockoff".

I smile, say that's nice, and then tell them more about their knife. Ever since I was told my new G-10 Native in CPM440V with Abalone inserts was "OK" but "I have this nice dagger with a dragon and......" I learned to give them their day and only try to teach those who want to learn.

Most people would easily last a week, as they would simply exist as they do every other day of their lives. The most resistant cutting chore most folks face these days is a plastic clam shell. They would simply shuffle off and look for some scissors to do the work for them. ::shrug::

I carry what I like, that means mine is best for me. Nothing else means jack.

I've never had anyone try to one-up me with knives, but if they did, I would look at their blade and then disarm them with a simple comment like "that IS a nice knife". It gives them a chance to beam with pride which is basically the only thing they were looking for. This has always worked in non-knife situations. They walk away proud and satisfied and I walk away thankful that I (long ago) outgrew the immature need to feel superior to others.

there's a guy at my office that thinks all knives should be able to open with a flick of the wrist. all his knives are crappy to decent, but he constantly sits and flicks them open like it's a nervous habit or something. i can hear it all day long and it drives me nuts. i've showed him a couple of spydercos and benchmades and he tries to flip them open, can't, and hands them back to me with a look on his face that says "crappy knife".

i learned after about two times of showing him a nice knife that it's better to just keep quiet and keep my new knives to myself.

I have been known to whittle a flat on the blade of some POS , an then whittle an edge back on to it .

Generally I don't take my blades out. If I take it out to One up them, then I have to let them see it. my knives stay on/with me.

Hold your cards close to you. (Don't let them see what you have)

A few comments:

1) Being caught with a knife in school is grounds for expulsion where I live, and also prosecution under state law and that applies even on campuses of the state university system. If it's the same where you live, be more discrete.

2) Any time you are "whipping it out" to show it off, you are opening yourself up to comments like that. Best thing is to keep it in your pocket until it is needed. Then it is a great tool by definition because it is solving a problem.

3) As a teenager, you are probably impressed by people that seem cool. Later on, you will grow to realize that the essence of cool is not really caring if others are impressed by you.

"Wow, a bootleg Leatherman."
"Wow, an idiot with an inferior multitool."

No one ever one-ups me.

What I get more often is "look at this, isn't it great?" and I get handed some CCC's or crap from Collector's Edge or BudK.
