So..how do you guys react to people trying to out do you? (guys who go "mines better"

Ahh, in class, some guy whipped out a leatherman charge and I whip out my SwissTool. Another guy jumps in and starts looking at it and goes, "wow, a bootleg Leatherman, oooh:jerkit:,etc)
I just kept my mouth shut.
Anyone else experience this?

I'd be real careful about "whipping out" any kind of sharp object in a school situation. You may learn a painful lesson. That could mean suspension and perhaps criminal charges as well.

The advantage of carrying high end knives: few I meet can reach in their pockets and come up with "better" :D

My college doesn't care. We use leathermans, etc all day long building stuff. Theres more dangerous stuff floating around

OK. Glad to hear it. Just trying to be helpful. The younger members of the forum need to be careful about carrying knives/sharp objects into the public schools. Good luck!:)

Victorinox started making the "multi-tool" pattern long before leatherman did. If anything, the leatherman is the boot-leg.

I agree myright, when someone discovers what I have paid for a knife they will tell me everything they could have bought for that amount of money. I simply agree with them on what they could buy and then tell them for that amount of money I could buy this knife and it usually ends right there. They still think I'm strange, but I don't give a da#n about that.;):)

I don't carry to dicksize with someone else. In these situations, I just respond with "mine gets the job done". If the guy's an obnoxious jackass, which they usually are, I tack on "asshole" to the previous statement.

I've never met another true knife nut face-to-face so it hasn't been a problem. I have co-workers that I turned on to quality knives, and they are all more than happy with their Spyderco and Benchmade knives. When I show them my newest Emerson, they just shrug and say, "that's too damn big for me".

So we are all happy with our choices.

I sort of do the same thing. When people ask why i need so many nives or why i spend so much, i normally counter with why do girls need so many shoes. i bet all of knives have been used more than some of those shoes. That normally shuts them up.

I'd be nice about it, but informative. "Leathermans are great tools, but Victorinox has been making knives for over a hundred years."

I usually have the "better" quality knife than most of the people I meet, but I don't rub it in their face. So I don't come across that and I don't give people crap about how mine's better. I'm just happy to see others EDCing a pocket knife.

Agreed.
Its also nice to be able to talk to other people about knives, sometimes.

Unfortunately, there's always the individual that can't, or wont, pay the price of a good knife, so whenever a knife discussion starts, he'll "talk some trash" about how dumb you are, 'cuz "you cudda bought a Buck (or Gerber) for half the price and had a helluva lot better knife."

I usually just smile and walk away. You can't carry on an intelligent discussion unless you're discussing the subject with itelligent people.

I just kept my mouth shut.

I don't have the patience anymore for those one-sided "let me tell you in excruciating detail about my new __________ " (insert car, boat, knife, gun, tool, etc.) types of conversations. I usually find a way to be "distracted", and leave.

It's almost funny when someone brags about 'surgical stainless'. To that, I usually say something like, "Yup. Scalpels get dull too, ya know."

thx - cpr

One of the blessings of being a tad older is that so are most of my friends. They are now mature enough not to say such things. (And if someone my age isn't mature enough to be polite he is not my friend.) If we are showing off knives, cars, houses, etc. we politely admire the other's possession and don't look for bragging rights.

I try not to ever see those folks again.
Of course sometimes you're related to them, and that's not as much of an option; unless of course their spouses and children are jerks, too.

The stuff I have is so nice and so obscure I don't even bother. It's personal pride- like Concealed Carry. I know so that's all that matters.
