Here's how it happened. I was just sitting down, messing with the cryo as i usually do and then found myself flipping and closing it with my left hand and then *snap* I've heard the sound before from the cryo when closing but this time is was louder. I thought nothing of it but when i tried to flip it again, it dawned on me. I broke my kershaw cryo :(. I took a picture for you guys to see

Mine did the same exact thing. Can't say I was surprised. I took the broken spring out and now it's manual.

Not a great idea with the Cryo, I'd think. Mine has no detent, so without the bar it would be flopping open all the time and wouldn't flip properly either . . .

Like everyone is saying. Contact kershaw and they will help you out and send you a new one. It is an easy fix. Just make sure you put in some grease or maybe petroleum jelly on the torsion bar when you install the new one so that it does not rattle. There are tutorials here on the forum and youtube, all it takes is a simple search.

Oh and make sure you use proper tools to take it apart to avoid stripping the screws. I think it uses T8 and T6 torx.

The torsion bars can break. Contact Kershaw Warranty, and they'll take care of you.

Per the Kershaw FAQ:
How long does the Speed-Safe torsion bar last?

We test our torsion bar to 10,000 openings. However, at some point, the torsion bar may need to be replaced. We will gladly do this at our facility free of charge.

Here's a post from Kershaw a while back about the torsion bars. If they're going to fail, they tend to do so fairly early on. If they make it past the early wearing-in period, they should be good for a very long time.

Don't feel bad I have broke my Cryo twice. Contact Kershaw and they will take care of it. The only down side is because it is an off shore knife you will have to mail it in and they will mail you another one. No big deal.

thats why I dont buy china kershaws anymore $8 to send a $20 knife in for repair only usa kershaws and zt from now on. Thats unless kershaw pays for shipping?

ps if I was to buy a chinese knife it would be from an awesome company like kershaw.

Yeah i agree, i went on a whim to get the cryo just for flipping because it was only $25. Shipping would be 5.80 so that doesnt bother me to much. Now that im getting a 561 with custom scale i wont miss this one while its off to kershaw

Call or write Kershaw before sending it back. They may very well have torsion bars in stock, even for their imported products. I just got a replacement torsion bar for a Volt II from Kershaw (actually, they sent me two), and that is also made in China.

You can email them and ask for spare torsion bars and they'll ship them to you for free. You can do the repairs yourself in about five to ten minutes.

I know they will for usa made kershaws but on their website it says for knives made in china you have to send the knife in and the volt 2 was the first knife Ive heard of that they sent a part out did they chang their policy?

Kershaw Warranty should not have to replace what is obviously user error.

Just as you should not obsessive compulsively repeatedly fire an automatic, you should not do the same with assisted knives.
Just as if you were to bend a coat hanger back and forth quickly, your spring will fail from this destructive practice.

Obsessive Compulsive flipping of any knife can deform lockfaces and lock bars, destroy stop pins and in the case of assisted knives, also break springs.

All he did was expedite the process that would eventually happen down the road.

If you want to change it to a manual (which is what i decided to do) all you need to do is drill a small hole or dip at the end of the detent track so that the detent gets activated!
