I broke my Rat Daddy on a recent camping trip. I contacted Swamp Rat for warranty service, but I'm really afraid of what their answer will be. They've asked me to send it in for inspection. How do you fulfill a life time warranty on a knife that is no longer made, is currently worth 3 times the original price, and has no equal in your current lineup? A $248 shop credit wont even get me a Rodent 9 which is smaller, to begin with. Ugh!! I'm literally sick over this. That knife was a beast. A real classic... :(

I think you will not be disappointed by whatever they decide to do. They are not a petty company.

By the looks of the fracture and the corrosion in some of the areas, there was a crack there for a while. What you did just finished it off.

I have faith, being that they are a great company... but realistically, what COULD they do? I don't see them digging out some RD that was sitting on a shelf to replace mine... make another one-off RD? Doubtful... Pay me going secondary market value? Very doubtful. So its not that they wont try to help... but what could they realistically do?

A lifetime warranty sounds great in theory, but how do you help a guy who's knife is 20 years discontinued and worth 3 times what it originally went for?

I am so sorry for your loss. That really stinks!!! :( That's an irreplaceable DHT model too. :barf:

While I'm sure they'll take care of you, I empathize with how you feel, as those are getting pretty hard to come by. :(

Yeah, that's crossed my mind more than a few times. If you can't use them and enjoy them, what's the point? :o The only thing that keeps me beating on my "vintage" Rats is that you rarely see this happening. Sucks when it does though. :(

Exactly! And their warranty literally says they expect you to put it through hard use and abuse. I'm mean, you couldn't break it in a more "warrantyable" way... Batoning through a piece of wood!!!???

That sux. I think with a regrind there still is life left in that knife though. Could have been worse. From what I've heard they'll take care of you one way or the other. Hope the best.

You mean some wicked-assed recurve grind?

Something like that. Looks like there is still alot of steel left to work with. Who knows might even come up with something you like better than original. Not trying to downplay a Bad situation but think there's still potential for it or sure something else will be worked out. Feel for ya, I really do. Curious to see what happens here. How much did you pay for it?

I seem to remember about 5 bills. I'm sure if I searched all my subscribed threads, I could find it.

That's definitely a bummer, but I agree with the sentiment that SRKW will make it as right as they can.
Sometimes I wonder about just how may blades come back for warranty, how many are repairable/replaceable, and how many are just a total loss.

I bet they could take a R9 blank and get you something close to a Rat Daddy profile.
Albeit smaller and with no DHT.

I would just have faith in their experience and trust them to treat you right.

That looks like fat wood to me. I can imagine a log that size being some super tough stuff to get through.

Well that's what I'm afraid of though. Different handle/profile is fine, but I really don't want a shorter knife... I don't know... I'm just holding out to hear from SR. Hopefully I'm pleasantly surprised.

I don't think it would be all that much trouble for them to give you the same knife, if they chose to. I think it's more likely they'll give you a modern equivalent. I'm guessing that's what you're hoping for as well. :D

Not very likely, Rat Daddy was made long time ago and there wouldn't be any blanks left. Maybe a Mountainmandu could be made (SR-77 though).

Only knives for which they still have blanks can be made. I bet that in the last 5 years they got hundreds of requests for Rat Daddy, Mastiff, Ratweiler, Chopewiler and Desert Jack to name a few 'classic' Swamp models.
Aside from the re-worked Ratweiler (LE and TM versions) none of those were made.

I would just think there would be some blanks set aside for warranty work only... I have no idea, just speculation

I've held in my hands a replacement knife for a faulty Rat Hunter (another old school Rat), and it was Rodent 3.

A cold chill just ran up my spine! Whoof.
