I would consider this my 2nd big knife, the first being a SOG Revolver. I know 7" isn't huge, but for my small collection it is!

So my question is what should I know about this knife? I've seen what Fonly has done to the BK7 in terms of use. But I want to here from all BK7 owners if there is anything else I should know. Should I reprofile the edge? If so why? Different sheaths? Remove the finish? Tips for maintaining the knife? Etc...

I'm very much in love with this knife! (Especially since I got it new for $65!!!).

I like mine very much, but I love my BK9, the BK7 should serve you well, just use & enjoy! I would not remove the finish,it is very durable & will help protect your blade!

If you have the know how I would say take the shoulders off the edge, making an almost convex edge. It is very durable, and my BK7 has held that edge for along time. Plus the thing cuts like you would not believe.

Ps. Its not even funny how lucky you are for getting it that cheap. Have fun, Oh I also love my Revolver pairing that and my BK7 Is like to brothers out having fun! :D

I've been trying to find a way to get my Revolver and the BK7 in a nice tight package... But haven't been able to yet. I'm thinking about getting a sheath from the beloved Eric.

Fonly, did you used to hang out at the old survivorman forums? If so I just wanted to say Hi. Man, I miss those forums, they were fun times. I used to post under my real name robert lyttle.:)

ohh cool, how are you doing?. Oh, and yes I did:D

Congrats on your BK7! You'll love it.

My BK7 is my only "big" knife. I did like Fonly said and convexed the edge (knocked down the shoulder) on a bench sander. Made a huge improvement when it came to cutting.

All you really need to know about the BK7 is, you'll probably never push the boundary's of what it's capable of. It's one tough knife.

As for the sheath, the factory offering works fine. It isn't one of the best and it is known to rattle when shaken (edge-to-spine) but it does what is asked of it. Holds the knife securely, and offers a pocket that is just large enough to hold a multi-tool or an Altoids tin full of gear.

Use it. Abuse it. Report back here with your findings.

Chris

P.S. It will punch through the roof of a Grand Cherokee without a problem so you can leave that one off your list. :p

Wow, nice work, I've been looking for one as well. Where did you buy it?

Thanks

I love my BK-7 but I would not remove the coating,I would upgrade the sheath though? I got a spec-ops survival sheath for the BK-7 and the knife for the time being is my go to knife once the chores become to much for the TAK-1.

I struck a gold mine with another forum poster who found 3 at a sportsman's warehouse. He bought all of them for $50. I was very excited to get one of them.

Strip it, convex the edge and have fun.

Get the Spec-ops sheath for it, it fits perfect.

Woof. That's a good looking sheath, but its expensive. Does the pocket really have that much more room than the stock BK7 sheath?

I got the "Combat Master" for mine. The "Survival" has a huge pocket and is a lot more money. The pocket on the Combat Master is about the same size as the BK-7 sheath, big enough for a folding DMT, firesteel, etc.

I got my sheath on ebay for about $40. The quality is infinitely better on the Spec-ops. Plus you can use it with other large knives in that size range.

If you want I can take some comparison pictures for you tomorrow and post them.

Size comparison pictures would be great!

As a side note, is there any more specific information / howtos on doing the re-profiling?

If you do a search you should be able to find some threads.

Best way to put on a convex edge is with a belt sander.

This video shows how to do it. If you don't have the skills, there are plenty of people out there that can do it for you. If you want a convex edge that is. I like them a lot and they are easy to sharpen once the initial edge is set.

For more info on convex edges.

Thanks for the info ilbruche. So would the best "sharpener" for a convex edge be a belt sander shown in the video? I've been looking at the Spyderco Sharpmaker system. But, a low-end belt sander would be similar in price. Hum... I've migrated from the original topic, but oh well. Would a belt sander allow me to sharpen convex and flat grinds just as easily? I wouldn't mind having a belt sander for some other things as well...

Belt sander is great for a lot of things, like shaping handles once you start ripping scales off your knives.

It is good for the convex edge, but I'd stick to a sharpmaker for your flats.

You can get a 1" X 30" belt sander from Harbor Freight for about $40.
