So I started stripping my knife

230 - I just went down to the basement and tried two different things for you.

I did 320 cork alone and 320 cork followed by plain cork with green compound.

Here you can see the difference (the marks running lengthwise are just from wiping the blade down)

Here is a little closer for just 320:

This was a quick and dirty attempt to give you an idea.

Here is what i came up with quickly going from 180-600 (not removing all previous grit scratches):

Not saying this is how to do it or anything because I don't think it is really the best way. Just the most recent thing I have been trying out.

So did you decide to give up on doing it yourself?

Honestly, yes. If I had a better belt sander I would have, but I don't even know what I did with the platen on mine. I solely use it to convex edges, then I just use sandpaper/mousepad. I'm going to send it in to Norcal, will post pics when I get it back. I do appreciate the help though, I just really don't want to attack it anymore than I already have. Might as well get the handles pulled and everything satined while im at it.

Great idea. That really makes a big difference having the handles off.

I thought you were going to try by hand though:)

It's going to take me DAYS to sand this by hand, I really had no idea how long a project I was looking at, but wow, I was getting nowhere fast.

I did a Ranger RD6 by hand for a buddy a couple years back. Took about a night.

Hope it works out great for you and I can't wait to see the pics.

Yeah, i'll make sure to post pics when I get it back. Hell, I can't even send it out until monday, but what i've seen of norcals work, it's exactly what I wanted.

Cool! I have always wanted to send one of my Busse's to Ban. I think his work is amazing. Almost out of this world.

Well it isn't Ban, but from the pics of the satin AK norcal did, I feel like i'm in good hands.

Honestly, lesson learned, buy satin if you want satin. I'm pretty sure Norcal is hooking me up real good because he was pitying me. It's like seeing a kid at an icecream shop soooo excited about his triple stacked cone, only to see it fall on the floor. Everyone would want to buy him a new cone. :D

Oh I am not saying you made the wrong choice. I just like that "frosted" finish Ban does.

Yeah, he seems to do the same as well. Hope he doesn't mind me posting his work, i'm pretty sure he posted them here before.

How do the "handles get pulled" without damaging them? Just curious about the process =D

You have to drill one side with a 1/4" drill then carefully tap the tubing out with a pin punch.
don't try and drill all the way thru you will only make the holes oval.
WARNING The knife should be clamped down before you try drilling.
