So is the Emerson CQC-7 All Hype?

Alarion---Good post.
Actually, the Japanese did have a specialized blade to thrust/puncture---the Yorio Toshi.
This is a simple choice re: blade style; Utility, V grind."Other", chisel. Or...get what you like.

I picked up my first Emerson 3 or 4 months ago, a CQC-7A, and I was extremely impressed! There were two things that I didn't like-the clip was extremely tight (not necessarily a bad thing-it's easier to loosen them then tighten them), and I'd really like to see the same design with a better blade-to-handle ratio (which is purely an aesthetics issue for me). The liner, at least on mine, was plenty thick enough! Lock-up was great, the G10 is grippy, and the knife defintely felt 'hard-use' worthy in my hands!

One thing that bears mentioning, too-my knife came with an excellent grind on it! Though a saber grind, directly behind the edge was extremely thin, much better than I had expected. Prior to receiving it I had planned on sending it to Tom Krein, as I expected an edge too thick to be useful, and I was very pleasantly surprised to see that it wasn't necessary!

I find Emersons to be hype. They (current production lines excluding frame locks) all have a very thin liner. For "number 1 hard use knife in the world", I expect the liners to be a bit thicker. Even my ZT0200 (not too much price difference) has a thicker liner. I also have the CQC12 (the best of their current production lines), and I'm so disappointed when I found out it had plastic washers. It's not a cheap knife, I'd expect bronze washers for smoother action.

My deepest apologies for my honesty, just the way I feel.

FWIW the liner thickness has a lot less to do with durability than the fitting of the liner, a good example imho is the spyderco millie, an extremely thin liner thinner than EKI's and ya rarely hear of problems with them, in fact since '04 or so ya rarely hear of problems with EKI liners and when ya do hear of them these days the knife usually has been waved lot.

as far as plastic washer they supposedly add lubricity and work better than the bronze, i know folks who have added the bronze and went back to the nylon, & the nylon have always worked fine for me & i have customs worth a lot more than a '12 is with nylon bushings which again have always been fine.

also imho EKI's F&F is much improved since ~ '04 or so, they did used to be kinda "rough" in some ways but the newer ones are as good as anybodys imho, QC is much improved vs a few yrs back.

no need for apologies lol, its like chocolate and vanilla, i like EKI's and dont like others to each there own.

sifu1a does make excellent points there. I forgot that my millie also had thin liner, but it never failed me. As a matter of fact, the Spyderco military is one of my favorite EDCs. I guess I'm going to try Emersons again. I don't want to miss the fun that you all have with your Emersons !

Many thanks sifu1a :)

My CQC-7 is taking a rest in my night-stand.
See how it goes. :)
I wonder how long this new one will claim my pocket??

i hope ya have better luck with 'em this time around, and i think ya will, they really have gotten better in regards to the liner lock and F&F lately.

You don't need a large blade unless you're trying to compensate for something else

I just bought a CQC-7B, no wave or serrations, black-t coated. I haven't had a "emerson designed" knife since the old Benchmade/Emersons. This thing is much nicer than the old benchmades IMO. The locking liner is thicker on this new emerson than the benchmade IIRC. It's cool that you can take it apart with regular tools, and Emerson doesn't mind to boot! It seems like he fixed some of the issues I had with the old benchmades. It's just a good, dependable, solid tactical knife.

i also very much prefer the EKI '7 vs the BM 970 or 975, though i wouldnt mind finding a deal on a LNIB 975Bt or 975SBt, i like the longer blade, and while i have a emerson I&I tanto its LNIB and long disco'd/and limited production to boot so i dont carry it so a 975 would be cool, but all in all the EKI's have a lot better F&F than the BM's did and are waved and tip up(i prefer tip up FWIW) to boot.
