So it begins (tomorrow is my first day carrying a totally different style of knife)

For years (all my life, I'm 30something now) I've carried modern folders, no specific style within that genre but always modern style folders. Last year I started to use fixed blades more and more till I'm now carrying a single 4-6" fixed blade daily as my only knife (I use to carry 2-3 folders) and while I've been happy with the change I miss having a super thin tip on my knife for delicate slicing.

I've thought about this a while, I've carried those folding replaceable razor blade knives but after thinking more tomorrow is day one of carrying a slip joint multi blade knife in my pocket along with my big FB...

Anyone else changing up their carry habits suddenly? Any regrets when you did? Wish you would of done it sooner?

A modestly-sized fixed blade plus an SAK is probably the best combination for someone who needs to cut all day long. You pretty much have all your bases covered.

I will! I'm excited as I had a new class of knives to shop for lol.

I picked up a pair of SAK's, one custom off the exchange [used] and one new from a garage sale and I also dug out an old timer I was gifted and never carried even once. I'll be going with the stock SAK tomorrow but I see plenty of use for the 3 blades on the old timer so it'll probably go in my truck or bag too.

I'll update throughout the week.

I carry a fixed blade daily from ML knives either in a tradition sheath or a small of the back I made myself. I back that up with a Boker gnome. For when the fixed blade is too large or pulling it out might frighten someone .A

I started carrying an sak again this week, finally replaced the one I lost. I carried my old one occasionally, but my new super tinker will be a pocket staple. When summer comes, I'll probably get a smaller, lighter sak. I wish I could put a clip on a small one, as gym shorts have such shallow pockets.

I've never really been a slip joint/old school folder guy, at least not after discovering modern folders when I was in high school.

I'm in my late thirties, and losing my ancient Wenger opened my eyes to SAKs again. I've used the ST so much since I got it. Yesterday taking apart a TV remote, cleaning mud and rocks out of the wheel wells of my nephews' transformers, stripping wire, and a few other things. Used the big Philip's head to install a new toilet seat Friday night, because the screwdriver I had brought didn't fit, and I didn't feel like walking all the downstairs to the garage for a different one.

My tastes in knives have changed over the years, and I find myself wanting smaller, lighter weight knives. Add the additional weight and bulk of an insulin pump, and small knives just make sense.

Most of my knives are around that three inch mark. Spyderco Domino, TSF Beast, Bailey model 2, Brous Bionic, PM2, Manix 2, SG Spider Monkey for example.

I rarely carry my Spyderco Gayle Bradley and Kizer Ki 4423.

What are you going to be carrying?

I normally carry a fixed blade or a modern folder and a traditional. The traditional is often stood upright next to my wallet.
I like to carry a splitback whittler, a GEC #48 or a GEC Sodbuster.
Though I would love to get a GEC #82 Dixie or a #98 Camp.

I find that the combination often affords me to have blades that are more ideally suited to a broader range of tasks. I realized that I would rather have two knives that excel at particular tasks than one knife that Can do everything, albeit in a slightly more cumbersome manner.

Get a couple of these little suspension clips for your SAKs. I have them on all of mine.

I'm not a fixed blade guy. I've tried it, but prefer a folder clipped in pocket, but with my modern folder I always carry a slipjoint of some sort. Either an SAK or a traditional GEC, Queen, Etc. On "light duty" days I'll only carry a multi blade traditional.

Be warned though, the world of traditional knives is one deep damned rabbit hole and will make your wallet much, much lighter.

I made the switch a couple years ago. Now its always a 6-7" fixed and a slipjoint (although I have a ZT0392blk that gets carried too).

If you could carry a gun though, do you think you'd bother with the fixed blade?

Very good point. I'd probably be carrying my DDR AXD in addition to a 9mm 1911.

I carry a small FB on weekends and would carry it all the time but the fumbling to put it back in the sheath aggravates me. I carry it in a leather pouch type sheath suspended from a D (from a belt loop) ring and it rides in the right back pocket. I hate stuff hanging on my belt.

My edc in Colorado was an ESEE Izula on my hip, 5 oclock and a leatherman charge in my backpack. Then I moved to Chicago and now it's a modest Spyderco folder front right pocket. Does most of what I need but just feels like not enough.

Yeah, that's my thing. I like the idea of a larger fixed blade for self defense, if you're carrying a knife for self defense. Mine just cut stuff so the fixed blade seemed unnecessary.

What are you going to be carrying?

Tomorrow will be an Esee 4 or Izula (depending on what specifically I'll be doing tomorrow, we work mostly in a EXTREMELY liberal area where anything over 3" may as well be a long sword) paired with a custom put together 2 blade & poker tool* alox SAK.

Also in the lineup for this week (days when I'll be working around the shop away from the public) will be my Rtak2 which I plan to pair with a old timer I've had laying in my safe for years and never carried one minute.

*maybe it's a leather awl, not sure what it's called specifically but it looks super useful for lots of stuff I need to do all the time.

Which one do you recommend? I hop on Google and there's 1000 of options but when I switch to Amazon the only real choice I see is nite-eyez crap.

Tec P7 seems to be popular.
And that is an awl that you are talking about.

The Tec P7 is awesome. I carry several knives with bails using it and on my larger (91mm) SAK's it works perfectly for hanging the knife right along the seam of the pant leg inside the pocket. Even a big three layer like my alox Pioneer X disappears when hanging there.

Apparently I wasn't searching the right terms... I'm an idiot lol, got it now! Thanks for the suggestion guys, ordered the two pack, they should arrive tuesday.
