let's see...

somewhat around 30 years ago, these were the prices for some "new to market knives" as featured in a famous catalog:

machax: $82.50 - random net price? $82.00

campanion: $75.00 - random net price? $63

well. how's that for value my droogies?

and to think i hear from time to time people saying "they cost too much". bs. nothing of this current quality can touch it. that i know of :) consider that a challenge.

Steel, 1095CV, sure it ain't some hyper new super steel, but its been around a long time and Kabar has the best HT in the biz.

I do not think of KaBar as the best HT in the business. Many more think of Buck Knives as the best HT. As 1095CV goes I do like KaBar.

Well I actually bought my first Becker BECAUSE of KA-BAR, I always loved and trusted them so when I looking at other KA-BAR's and came across the Becker I was like ok why not, if KA-BAR makes it gotta be good. Never regretted it, I have only known Becker knives as they are now with KA-BAR and they seem damn fine blades to me and a super deal for what you get. Hate to make this comparison and lets not have this become a rage rant thread, but I kinda see it like Cold Steel in a way, the more recognizable and known a product gets the more complainers will come out of the wood work or individuals that want to tear others down when they are succeeding and becoming more well know and liked.
Beckers as they are, are top notch to me so not sure what others are talking about, if such nonsense is being said, some people just can't be satisfied or made happy no matter how good a product is.

Well I actually bought my first Becker BECAUSE of Camillus. They were also excellent HT just a different steel.

To me Beckers are tanks. They are designed for purpose and purpose alone. I don't need pretty paint or shiny tracks. I don't need it decked out or bedazzled. I need it to do its job and perform reliably when called in to action and that is what my Beckers do time and again. They are my tanks.

I only own 2 so far, the 7 & 17. I'm very happy with the product so far. I've enjoyed reading the boards here when I do stop in to see what's cookin'. So let me say thanks to everyone that brings us these awesome tools at an affordable price.

For some reason, folks seem to think that Kabar is lowering the quality of the BKT knives. Whether it be the steel, handles, sheaths, or grind, for some reason, folks aren't seeing it.

So, I wanted to point out a few things, mostly, the quality upgrades that YOU GUYS AND GALS have helped make happen.

Steel, 1095CV, sure it ain't some hyper new super steel, but its been around a long time and Kabar has the best HT in the biz.

Coatings, ya'll said the old coatings wore to easily, so, you got a newer, tougher coating.

QC, some of you got a bent blade, we that was due to roll stamping and now that is gone.

Switch from Grivory to Zytel, THEY ARE THE SAME THING, JUST A DIFFERENT NAME!! both are equally durable and adaptable, just don't put them in an open flame.

The sheaths suck, well, have you seen the new ones? They are better material with tougher stitching, more options, and are on going to be one every blade soon.

Oh, and did I fail to mention that the price has only gone up 4% in the last 5yrs? Yeah, that is it, even on the most expensive BKT knife, that's only an increase of $4.

SO, all the new quality upgrades, a slight increase in price, and the same tough as knives as before.

If you are not seeing the quality upgrades, then you simply are not looking.

Bottom line, Kabar is bending over backwards to increase every level of the the BKT line, except the price, which, is not going to break your wallet.

Sorry for the rant, but these things need to be pointed out sometimes.

Feel free to comment, but I won't let this turn into a debacle, anything other than cordial discussion, and I'll close this thread and issue warnings.

Thanks for the post Moose, it brings to light important points that always get looked past. And equally important, to me at least as I am new here, is the fact that Uncle Ethan and Ka-Bar take to heart the criticisms and work on them even if they are (imo), negligible matters.

Having worked with big distribution systems, my voice never gets heard past the sterile call center agents and next thing I know I am sent a replacement component with the same issue. So the environment here really surprises me, and with the associated freedom in the intermess, people just blow off I guess and forget to think it through.

Moose,
who is saying such nonsense? I have only heard good things about Kabar

No on in particular, but over the last few months, I have heard different "comments" from various places.

I got an email a couple of days ago from a non forum poster tooting his horn. Kinda put me on edge.

Well, he/she can get bent. Kabar is good stuff. We know it, and since Ethan's designs have been around for 30 or so years, and are still going strong, I think others see it to.
NUFF SAID!

Since neither name is descriptive, presumably they are trademarked names, like 'Kydex', 'Kleenex', etc.
Same material, different supplier. This happens ALL THE TIME in manufacturing. You can only buy 'Velcro' from 3M, for instance.
Though I'm not the authority here.

This.

I like the crappy sheaths! It keeps me busy ;)

No really I do like the new tweener sheaths. That don't mean I'm not going to not make amy leather pants for them; someday.

Speaking of which; moose when will you be sending the two I don't have to make templates from? :D

Really the only thing I don't like is that one guy.;)

About the only time I ever hear anything negative about Kabar or Becker is from a Busse fiend but they don't like anything but waiting in line for something they will never use. I try not to listen to people who don't understand that knives are actually supposed to be used regardless of what they cost.

I will now go grab a couple extra mags and wait for fanatical busse assassins. lol
