This weekend I was at the Gathering VIII show here in Vegas. I knew going in that I wanted either a Strider SnG or a Hinderer XM-18. I figure if I find a unique knife, something different from the standard models avaliable from blade HQ that would be my next knife. $420 is the price found at multiple booths but nothing unique about them.

So as I was headed out of the showroom I pass the monkey edge booth I hear "ok, it's time for our next offering. We will have a roll off". There was only ten people there and 6 people rolled the dice. Guy asks if there is anyone else and I figure why not. I live in Vegas, I'm no stranger to dice so I will try. A woman rolled a 10 and myself and two others rolled a 8. Salesman says good we have four winners.

I'm standing there thinking a patch or maybe a hat is the prize. Guy pulls out four Hinderer boxes and puts them on the counter. Now, I did not for a second think we were getting free knives. So I'm just standing there listening. He unwraps a XM-18 monkey edge exclusive sparrow edition knife. So I'm standing there with a lost look on my face. Someone next to me says "dude if you don't want it, I guarantee you can sell it for a profit before you leave this room".

I handled the knife and first thing I see is CPM 3V and not the usual S35VN on the blade, it's all black and has a frag pattern scale. Sold, $475 for my unique XM-18. It is exactly what I didn't know I was looking for. More pics tomorrow for some outside shots in the sun. Dark knives and flash pics don't turn out well.

It's called the sparrow because of the grind. Spear point + arrow = sparrow. The extra bevel on top makes a arrow shape when viewed from the top as you hold the knife.

So you got a free knife? It was unclear if you did or not from your writing.

Roll off's I use are large dumpster containers. ;)

Not free. $475 was the price mentioned in the first post

$475 was a still good price I guess, but not as exciting as getting it for free:) At one point I was thinking you got it for free.

What an opportunity to own a piece of work like that. 3v hinderer for $475 sounds like a great deal to me.

So, what was the purpose of the "roll off" other than an opportunity to spend $475?

Best answer is to say try to find a sparrow of your own to have. Only one place sells them in the world. And even that place will only sell you one. And if they catch you trying to buy more than one they cancel all your orders for even trying to be dishonest.

There are only a few made so how would you select who gets one and who doesn't? Monkey edge choose to give people a chance with the roll of the dice. Seems fitting as we are in Las Vegas, don't you think? 🤓

No problem Megawatt308. When I first read your initial post, I was thinking you got it for free. I did see the $475, but the "free" was fixed in my brain at that point. It does seem fitting in a way in Vegas. Most people (tourists) blow every cent they have gambling and why not spend it on a cool knife?

If I was in the market for another XM, that's the one I would be aiming for.
3V is a huge + on what is already a great knife.

Congrats, I know if I do end up TRYING TO FIND one of those, it's not gonna be anywhere near $475.00...

I found some info from the monkey edge guys on the coating applied to this sparrow .

"Ion Bond DLC PVD Coating PVD is Physical Vapor Deposition and is a process by which a material is evaporated and then deposited (coated) onto a surface. Unlike many coatings that are thick and have high spots, PVD coatings can literally be laid on atoms thick and the coating is even. In this case, the DLC stands for Diamond Like Carbon in which the material being deposited is carbon (along with a trade secret of other minerals). The result is a tough finish that is incredibly corrosion resistant. In addition, it just plain looks badass! PVD is not a paint and therefore will not flake off."

Awesome knife and a great story to boot. That's a special one for sure. :)
