This weekend I was at the Gathering VIII show here in Vegas. I knew going in that I wanted either a Strider SnG or a Hinderer XM-18. I figure if I find a unique knife, something different from the standard models avaliable from blade HQ that would be my next knife. $420 is the price found at multiple booths but nothing unique about them.
So as I was headed out of the showroom I pass the monkey edge booth I hear "ok, it's time for our next offering. We will have a roll off". There was only ten people there and 6 people rolled the dice. Guy asks if there is anyone else and I figure why not. I live in Vegas, I'm no stranger to dice so I will try. A woman rolled a 10 and myself and two others rolled a 8. Salesman says good we have four winners.
I'm standing there thinking a patch or maybe a hat is the prize. Guy pulls out four Hinderer boxes and puts them on the counter. Now, I did not for a second think we were getting free knives. So I'm just standing there listening. He unwraps a XM-18 monkey edge exclusive sparrow edition knife. So I'm standing there with a lost look on my face. Someone next to me says "dude if you don't want it, I guarantee you can sell it for a profit before you leave this room".
I handled the knife and first thing I see is CPM 3V and not the usual S35VN on the blade, it's all black and has a frag pattern scale. Sold, $475 for my unique XM-18. It is exactly what I didn't know I was looking for. More pics tomorrow for some outside shots in the sun. Dark knives and flash pics don't turn out well.
It's called the sparrow because of the grind. Spear point + arrow = sparrow. The extra bevel on top makes a arrow shape when viewed from the top as you hold the knife.
