So the year is effectively over--this year's best and worst

Among new knives of 2006 for me it is Caly3. Runner up is Kopa Apple Coral. Both are Spyderco.

Worst: what happened at Camillus, the non Strider Buck Strider Best: ZDP is king, the Sprint runs from Spyderco
Most Controversial: BM Vex

In 420H and Tarani - ized, it's no wonder they parted ways. Worst American Liner Lock ever.

The Ontario Hossum Retribution II (the small one) gets my vote for best knife for the money. The quality for the price is awesome!!

Good thing you waited this long. I just received the Hinderer XM-18 and the ZT 200 as passarounds, and they will top out my list, along with the ZDP Leek.

Worst? ZDP Leek, for all the QC issues I had to deal with before I got the good one.

Hey AM...

Great thread first off...

This may have been before your time but we use to have the Bladeforums awards here..

To be quite honest with you I miss those awards..I think it was a Great idea to have a list of nominees and everyone vote on them...Best custom Knife makers, best Production folder/fixed

It could possibly be done again,, if someone would be willing to put in the time...

I'd like to nominate the Endura WE4 for best folder of 2006

I'll also throw in the WHK Legacy in ZDP. This is probably my all time favorite small folder.

To me the best were the Spyderco military sprint with BG42, and the ZDP sprints ( pick one). Very, very nice.

Worst? Flip a coin. Mantis or Dork Ops

Lots of contenders out there for being best, but my vote goes to the Endura 4. The E3 was a tough design to improve given the loyal following, price point, design, and past materials used, but Spyderco managed to deliver a real upgraded winner in the E4.

I guess I'd also make a case for the E4 (and D4) being the most significant new knives introduced during 2006 due to the relative large numbers that will actually buy and use them.

I see one complication with nominating awards - most of the worst knives are never qualified by the phase "I own one." I only bad mouth stuff I have in hand. Conversely, I only praise stuff I have in hand. I rate my speculation as such.

So when I mention a knife, it's my hands on experience. I would like to hear from actual Dork OPs, er, Fark Orps, oh whatever, owners as to their actual experiences. Maybe I missed it.

Not that anyone seems to be off base from the looks of the merchandise or product descriptions. Like the Boker tactical (tacky - all?) that came out recently. Lots of trash talk - but I never heard from an actual user. Just a bunch of complaints saying what a ripoff of someone else's design. No actual hands-on knowledge.

Really defines the meaning of "incredible." Qualifying your ownership will only add to your credibility, and your speculation will certainly not suffer.

So, I nominate the Sebenza as best knife of the year. Don't own one, but how could it not be - again?

My vote goes for the Zero Tolerance 300's, I got my 302 for Christmas, It is perfection, cant find a flaw in it, and its built so damn strong..

I'll have to second,..er third,..er fourth ...whatever the xm-18. Built like a tank and flawless fit and finish.

Please forgive me if I have offended (tirod3)or anyone else for that matter regarding my Gerber comment. Years ago I had a very nice small collection of Gerber knives and then they were great knives. In my opinion Gerber has failed to keep up with the rest of the knife & tool manufaturers regarding materials and or quality. Sure, the premium knives they made years ago are still great knives today but that is just the couple mentioned by (tirod3) Someone where I work sold a Gator w/ATS-34 for $6.00 because he wanted the money to purchase a CRKT M-16. This is Gerber Premium Steel Huinting knife. I would love to see Gerber Slam the market at the next major knife show with some up to date builds including todays Steels and handle designs & materials. Something innovative that I just gotta have!!!! Not another Cheap feeling & looking Paraframe or Vector or Fatty. I still carry my Harsey Air Ranger now and then but that was not a THIS YEAR KNIFE.... Thats all. ~baba~
