So this fell into my hands....

Straight from the horse's mouth.
That little knife was already a really cool piece anyway, but knowing that it's the real deal makes it that much sweeter! Congratulations!

That is great news, I thought it looked good, but then again in the folder world, there are some real clever people as well - who unfortunately spend their talents on fleecing people :-(, and with my infinite wisdom - in earlier days I thought some Bowies looked good - until I put them up in Bernards forum - got skinned alive, and crawled back into my cave lol.
The documentation from Case would be an extremely important part of keeping with this knife I would say. Great news Dave !!

I guess I went into this not thinking there were few of these knives around. You would think as a cheap knife they made and sold thousands of them. Old Case knives are not hard to find.

Did they tell you how old it was though? 50cents wasn't so little in say 1909, when a bar would give you a free lunch if you had a nickel for a beer. (My Grandpa's experience)
Great knife, great find! Congratulations.

Seems to me, if they were made as a low-cost alternative, most of them were likely used up & broken eventually, leading to very few surviving examples.

The stamp was used from 1920 -1940. Still 50 cents in those days was still a bit o cash.

Great news and a great find. You should contact Jim Sargent and have him add a pic of your knife in his next issue of American Premium Guide to Knives & Razors.
Make sure he values it at $128, too. Great pick up.

So, interesting comments over at Bernie's forum. Person said info in Witchers counterfeit knife book that the 50cent should have bone handles not wood, and that the non oval shield is rare with the combo. So I'll get back to Case and ask why they think its good.

Well I have to appologize to my fellow forum members. It appears that Case was too quick to call this one. The person that actually emailed me back and said it was legit was overruled by someone higher up the chain. The knife is indeed counterfeit. So it is with humility and egg on my face that I appologize for propagating this mistake.

There has been much written about these tang stamps and knives. Or not so much depending on how you look at it. I have yet to see a consensus among knowledgeable sources. Goins' show $.25 and .50 tang stamped but gives no detail. Pocket Knife Traders Guide only lists a Green Bone #6106, Tested era. Steve Pfieffer has a bit to say about it in his book. Personally I would go with Mrs. Dewey P. (Lavana) Ferguson, "Price Guide To Romance of Knife Collecting". They were valuing Case knives before just about anyone and discuss the $.25 knife but no others. You will find examples of $.25 Case Classic knives and you will find Parker Knife Service sold $.25/.50/1.00 knives in the 1990's. Like I said, much said but little in the end. Search some of the other knife forums and you will find numerous discussions about these in the past.

If it were my knife I would exercise the 14 day return policy. Serious Case guys would have run that price up quite a bit higher if it is the knife I think it is.

My humblest apologies. I stand corrected and will administer punishment upon myself shortly. Great find akadave2! I would be sure to preserve the letter from Case. You have an extremely rare knife.

Whoops! I still had my doubts but was willing to concede. Case does not have the records from that time period is my understanding. As a matter of fact my understanding is they have very few, if any, records prior to the Parker years.

I thought it was somewhat odd. I was going to ask the person at Case if they would mind me sharing the correspondence with the forum. The first person came back with a definitive answer the first time. When I questioned it based on information from Bernies forum they ran it up to one of their historians and it was identified as a dud.

That's too bad buddy. I had my fingers crossed and was happy when it was thought it was a good one.

You don't have to go too far off the reservation to get skinned in the knife world. And unfortunately Case knives on that site can be a real field of landmines. I have bought off there and will continue to do so but have usually stuck to where I see a collector liquidating a collection. Can't always do that.

Hope you get some good ones after this.

Will

Dave2 - all this being said just send it to me and I will make sure it is properly disposed of, no charge of course:D. Still a nice knife.
